Ten Cent Players to entertain Marshall

The Ten Cent Players is one of the new organizations that formed on campus this year. It gained recognition from Marshall Feb. 15.

“We’re looking for anybody interested in any aspect of theater,” Gregory W. Wheeler, president of Ten Cent Players, said. “Coming from a literary background, I’m not too excited about some of the acting. The spotlight holds no interest for me, and I’d rather just write.”

Wheeler came up with the idea for the group, along with Nathanial Kuratomi and Rebecca Settle.

“Although the theater department puts on great presentations, the idea of auditioning against theater majors seems too intimidating for the average student,” Wheeler said. “Additionally, the Ten Cent Players provide an outlet for students who wish to write material, maybe even entire scripts.”

The Ten Cent Players plan on getting started early next semester.

“Right at the start of next semester, we’d like to do some short bits of dramatic poetry. This project will allow freshmen a glimpse of what we’re about,” Wheeler said. “I’m working on a full-length script that will be a major project for the fall. Of course, this would require more time, effort and new members.”

There is an advantage to joining the group, Wheeler said.

“Students who join the organization not only have a creative outlet,” Wheeler said. “They also have a chance to work behind the scenes, writing material or directing the cast.”
