Joan C. Edwards and her now deceased husband James believed in giving back to help others in the community. They believed in this dedication so strongly that the couple has given millions of dollars to Marshall University and especially the College of Fine Arts. The University and President J. Wade Gilley and Mayor Jean Dean of Huntington thanked Mrs. Edwards by naming the Fine Arts building "The Jomie Jazz Center".
President Gilley and Mayor Dean also took the opportunity to thank Edwards by re-naming the Fine Arts building the "Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center." (Jomie is taken from the first two letters of Joan's name and the last three letters of James' "Jimmie".)
Ground was dedicated for the $4 million, 13,000 square-foot Jomie Jazz center project which is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2000.
James Edwards died in 1991 and was the owner and CEO of Namaco Industries - the holding company which owns National Mattress Company. The football field also bears his name. Joan Edwards, a former Jazz singer, is a successful Huntington businesswoman and continues to support Huntington and Marshall University. | ||||||||
