On April 20, 1998, months of working came to an end as the new $1.5 million Marshall Follett Bookstore was officially dedicated in front of a crowd of eager spectators. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on the steps of the bookstore with Marshall President J. Wade Gilley, Huntington Mayor Jean Dean and Student Body President Jeff "MacKenzie" Howard in attendance.
In appreciation to Marshall University and Follett Bookstore, Mayor Dean read a proclamation declaring April 20, 1998, "Marshall University Bookstore Day."
The winners of the "Year of the Book" essay contest were announced during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Marshall University students were given the opportunity to write on the topic of, "The Importance of Books in a Digital World." The first place winner was Eric Gollannek, who won $1,000 and one free year of textbooks from the bookstore. The second place winner was James Leo Meadows, who won $500 and one semester of free textbooks. The third place winner was Tamara Endicott. She won a $100 gift certificate.
After the dedication ceremony William Hoffman was available in the bookstore to sign his book, "Tidewater Blood" and students, faculty, and staff took the opportunity to have books signed.
For those who have not come into the new bookstore, there is no better time than now! Textbooks which were stored down in the basement have now joined clothing, snacks and other supplies in the new spacious bookstore. | ||||
