Daycare is Finally Coming to MU!Students Vote to Support Referendum

The number of faculty, staff and students with children has been rising at the university over recent decades. During this time those in need of childcare have been asking the university for over twenty-five years to establish a daycare center on the Marshall campus. For the past years, the university has looked at plans on how this could best be achieved for all groups involved. Now plans are beginning to take some shape.
The faculty and staff did their part to get the daycare project off the ground gathering regularly for planning meetings and working with Marshall officials to help coordinate plans. Soon students were asked to do their share of work to bring the daycare center to Marshall, which will be located at 22nd Street and 5th Avenue.
To help with the funding for the daycare center, Marshall University students were asked if they would be willing to have a student fee increase to help
fund the daycare center. First, the item was placed on a petition and students were asked to sign to have the item placed on a ballot for a campus-wide vote. Fourteen hundred students signed the petition to have the item placed on the ballot for a student vote.
For two days this Spring, students were given the opportunity to vote for or against bringing a daycare center to the university possibly at a fee increase to students. During the two day election, over six hundred students went to the polls to decide the fate of the center. Over this time, ninety percent of the students who voted, were in favor of the new daycare center thus again proving students are in support of daycare for Marshall University.
