Memorial Fountain Ceremony

Marshall remembers members of 1970 plane crash

Students gathered on the Memorial Student Center plaza on November 13, 1997, to commemorate the 27th Anniversary of the airplane crash which killed the 1970 Marshall football team, trainers, reporters and friends of the university.

The mood was somber and reflective as students from the university, athletes and members of the Huntington community and beyond gathered on the campus to remember those who lost their lives in the crash.

Members of the football team and athletic department were killed the evening of November 14, 1970, when the team's plane crashed into the side of the mountain while

attempting to land at the Tri-State airport in Wayne County near Ceredo, WV.

After the ceremony the Memorial Fountain, which stands on the plaza in remembrance for each of the 75 people who died in the crash, was turned off for the Fall and will remain off until next April.

This year's ceremony was marked by some controversey as the ceremony was moved from the anniversary date of the crash and celebrated on another day. This decision made by Student Government Presiden R. Matthew Glover did spark some anger as family members felt the anniversary should not have been changed to accomodate speakers for the ceremony.
