The game was touted as the "Thunder in the Mountains" between two of West Virginia's biggest in-state rivals, Marshall University and West Virginia University. Marshall opened their 1997 football season by playing West Virginia's biggest university and used this competition as a way to celebrate the Thundering Herd's return to the Mid-American Conference.
This was the most eagerly awaited game of the year and the excitement began as soon as the game was announced by the Marshall University Athletic Department. Fans prepared to head North with the team by the thousands and those back at the university celebrated with week-long campus events. |
The Thundering Herd and The Mountaineers went to the football field and the game was thunderous. Marshall's offense and defense played with precision and skill unlike never before. The t-shirts produced by the Student Affairs and Student Activities Offices expressed the sentiment of the day, the Herd went to play and they went to win! The running was swift and the tackles were hard as the game lead changed hands several times. In the end, West Virginia University walked away with the 42-31 victory.
Who knows how long it will be before Marshall University and West Virginia University will meet again on the football field here in West Virginia, but everyone hopes it won't be decades from now. | |||||||
