President J. Wade Gilley's fund-raising campaign for the last two years to increase donations for the John Deaver Drinko Library were so successful that in September the "Library Tie" was partially retired. The Library Tie was a specially selected tie which President Gilley wore every day for two years to fund-raising events.
In the end, the University successfully reached its goal of raising $29 million. Of the $29 million, 8 million dollars of this goal was raised by faculty and staff from the university. Funding was also achieved via state, federal funds and other private contributions. Bonds were sold while alumni and friends of the university generously opened their pockets for this project.
The Library tie may have been laid to rest, but President Gilley and Mayor Jean Dean contributed to the tie retirement by dedicating this year, "The Year of the Book"
Some of the events scheduled during this year are speakers. Dr. Jean Edward Smith, author of John Marshall: Definer of a Nation and Francis Fukuyama, author of The End of History, The Last Man, and Trust: The Social Virtues and the Creation of Prosperity are both scheduled to come to the university for a book signing and speaking engagements over the next year. | |||||||
