Enrollment at MU Rises:Students off to the Uptowner
|
The 1997 Fall enrollment of freshman and transfer students at Marshall rose so high that students were placed in rooms with one or two other students temporarily until space opened. Some students were asked to temporarily reside in the residence hall study lounges until vacant rooms became available. More were even told there were still not enough rooms and were given the opportunity to move to the Uptowner, a local hotel two blocks from campus, until rooms were opened.
The Undergraduate enrollment at Marshall this year was up by 451 students more than in 1996, a 4.1% increase over last year. Transfer students numbered a little over 900 new students. Once the Undergraduate student enroll |
ment was added to that of the Graduate School (including the newly merged Marshall Graduate School and Graduate College of Charleston (COGS)) the total enrollment for the Fall rose to a little over 16,000 students.
When new students are questioned about the student population boom many say excitement about the new state of the art John Deaver Drinko Library, the new Follett Bookstore and the return to the Mid-American Conference have all lead to students wanting to come to Marshall.
Whatever the causes may be, for Marshall it appears the future trend is for more students desiring to become members of the green and white.
