A FIRST: This is the first time that Marshall has won the Southern Conference tournament and received an automatic bid to advance to the NCAA tournament. Last year, the team lost in the finals by two points to Appalachian State.

HONORED:Sophomore Kristina Behnfeldt was named to the Southern Conference First Team. Junior Cindy McCauley was named to the second team. Junior Keri Simmons was named tournament MVP. Simmons and McCauley were on the all-tournament first-team, while Behnfeldt made the second team.

SIMMONS HEATS UP: Keri Simmons had a career tournament, averaging 16.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in the three games. During the regular season, she averaged 8.3 points and 5.4 rebounds. She also notched the third double-double of her career in the finals.

BLOCK PARTY: Marshall set the Southern Conference Tournament record for blocked shots with 13. They also blocked eight shots against Georgia Southern.

BEHNFELDT CARRIES TEAM: Kristina Behnfeldt has been the most consistent player this season for the Herd. She leads the team in scoring (15.4), rebounding (8.3), free-throw percentage (79.6 %) and minutes played (31.9). She is second on the team in steals (33) and field-goal percentage (50.5

Notes & Bio's

 

Keri Simmons turned in the best games of her career during the Southern Conference Tournament. In the three contests, Simmons averaged 16.3 ppg and grabbed 6.3 rpg. Through the regular season she averaged 8.3 ppg and 5.4 Ir'pg. She also earned her third "double-double" of her career in the finals (19 points and 10 rebounds).

Marshall set the Southern Conference Tournament record for blocked shots with 13. In the finals, the Herd also tied the tournament record for number of blocks in a game with eight against Georgia Southern.

Kristina Behnfeldt has been the most consistent player this season for the Herd. She leads the team in scoring (15.4), rebounding (8.3), free throw percentage (79.6%) and minutes played (31.9). Behnfeldt is second in the team in steals (33) and field goal percentage (50.5%).

Since senior Kristi Sexton took over the point guard position Marshall is 12-4. In those 16 games, Sexton has dished out 74 assists for an average of 4.6 a game. She also had a career-high of eight assists in two contests, coming against Furman on January 25th and Georgia Southern on February 10th. * Cindy McCauley is the teams main three-point threat. She has connected on 42-of-95 (44.2%). Freshman Jenny Lincoln and sophomore Natal Rosko have come off the bench to score 31 and 28 threes respectively. Lincoln is shooting 41.9 percent from behind the arc while Rosko is shooting 32.9 percent.

Coach Evans-Moore has been able to look to her bench this season for contributions. The reserves are led by sophomore Lisa Mason with 10.4 points per game followed by sophomore Natal Rosko with 5.9 ppg, sophomore Michelle Lenhart with 5.9 ppg and freshman Jenny Lincoln with 5.9 ppg.

Kristina Behnfeldt and Cindy McCauley led the team in scoring again this season. Last season the two combined, for 823 points while this year they have 779 points. These two are also getting closer to breaking 1,000 points in a career, McCauley has 939 points while Behnfeldt has 885 points in just two seasons.

Kristina Behnfeldt leads the team in "double-doubles" this,season with 11 while Erika Fall has four and Keri Simmons has three. Behnfeldt has 20 "double-doubles" in her two year career.

SARAH EVANS-MOORE, HEAD COACH

FIFTH YEAR With a strong background as a player and a coach, Sarah Evans-Moore is her fifth campaign in charge of the Marshall University womenls basketball program. In her attempts to push MU womenls basketball to a new level, Evans-Moore emphasizes strong basketball fundamentals and an adherence to the responsibility of the student-athletels academic welfare. This year is Evans-Moorels most successful season since taking the reigns. Her team has an 18-11 record overall and finished second in the Southern Conference with a 9-5 record. The team also won its first ever Southern Conference Tournament and received its first ever NCAA automatic bid. While leading her team to another winning season, Evans-Moorels squad also excelled in the classroom with a team grade point average of 2.92 in the fall semester. Prior to taking the helm of the MU program in 1992, Evans-Moore, a 32-year old native of Rio Grande, Ohio, spent two seasons as an assistant with the University of Georgia Lady Bulldogs, where those teams compiled a record of 47-15. The 1990-91 Lady Bulldogs squad finished 28-4, were the SEC champion and advanced to the NCAA West Regional Finals. As recruiting coordinator for Georgia, Evans-Moore landed the nationls #12 recruiting class in 1991 and the nationls #3 class for 1992, as rated by the Blue Star Recruiting Service. A graduate of Stanford University, Evans-Moore received her bachelorls degree in Economics in 1986. Evans-Moore played two seasons with the Cardinal and was the teamls leading scorer and rebounder as a sophomore before a back injury forced her to retire from playing. Before working at Georgia, Evans-Moore served as an assistant coach at Murray State (1986-89) and Louisville (1989-90). Evans-Moore is married to Joe Moore. The couple has a son, Owen, born in June of 1995 and are expecting another in May.

BRET MCCORMICK, ASSISTANT COACH

FOURTH YEAR Bret McCormick is in his fourth season as the top assistant coach on the Thundering Herd coaching staff. His primary responsiblity is to serve as the recruiting coordinator for the programas well as assist in practice planning, game preparation and scouting. Prior to coming to Marshall., McCormick worked as an assistant coach for Marshallls menls basketball head coach Greg White at the University of Charleston. In 1992-93 the team went 15-15 and won the WVIAC Tournament Championship. In the last 12 years, McCormick has gained a wealth of coaching experience directing numerous AAU basketball programs. Also he has experience as a junior high coach in the Point Pleasant school system. McCormick played his collegiate basketball for the University of Rio Grande from 1977-1981. He was the starting point guard for two years where he averaged 10 points and five assists per game. McCormick holds a bachelorls degree from Rio Grande in sales and marketing and a bachelorls degree from Marshall in physical education. McCormick is married to the former Tammy Calloway. The couple has a daughter, Lexus, born in January 1997.

PAUL NIXON, ASSISTANT COACH

FOURTH YEAR Assistant coach Paul Nixon is also in his fourth season with the Thundering Herd. Nixon, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, was a four-year student assistant with the Commodore menls program under coach Eddie Fogler and volunteered his time with the womenls program. In May of 1995, Nixon coached a team consisting of current and former collegiate womenls basketball players on a two-week mission trip to Lithuania. His father, Ed Nixon, coached womenls basketball for 25 years and made appearances in two Final Fours in 1974 with Mississippi College and again in 1985 with Mercer University. The Georgia native lettered three years in basketball in high school where during his senior season he was team captain, MVP and All-State. Also he lettered four years in track and one year in soccer. Nixon also assisted with various womenls programs while a student. Nixon has a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and a Master's Degree in athletic administration.

STEPHANIE WINE, GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH

FIRST YEAR Assistant coach Stephanie Wine is in her first season as a coach at Marshall. Wine just completed her four years of eligibility last season with the Thundering Herd when she led them to the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament. For her efforts she was a named the MVP of the tournament and First-Team All-Southern Conference Tournament. In this same year she was named Second-Team All-Conference. During her junior year she set a NCAA single game record with 14 steals at Western Carolina. While playing for Marshall, Wine reached second all-time in three-point attempts connecting on 97-of -336,. Also she rai-Lks seventh in steals with 177 and seventh in assists with 290. Wine was voted captain by her team and received the Donna Lawson Team Leadership Award her junior and senior seasons. She was named a co-MVP her senior year. Wine has a Bachelor of Science degree in history and political science and is currently pursing a Masterls degree in Education.
