MEDLINEplus
from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) lists high quality Web sites that consumers will find useful. Also, postings from pre-formulated Medline searches on commonly occuring conditions are available, but they are generally limited to citations from the last three months or less. Also, the search strategies are designed to find articles that would be useful to consumers and usually would not be suitable for professional clinicians and researchers.

Health and Human Services' Health Finder
consolidates links from "databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as the government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable health information for the public" Some documents are online and many others can be ordered from the agencies catalogs.

Combined Health Information Database (CHID)
"The value of this database is that it lists a wealth of health promotion and education materials and program descriptions that are not indexed elsewhere." All types of documents are indexed. Especially, harder to find ones like pamphlets, conference reports, but also journal articles. This is a catalog not an online source for the documents. Abstracts, how-to-order and prices are given.

The Simple Search is a word search (words are automatically anded ) of a single database or all 16 databases at once. The Advanced Search offers the chance to select fields, databases, year ranges, and document types when searching.

The following databases are available: AIDS Education, Alzheimer's Disease, Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, Cancer Patient Education, Cancer Prevention and Control, Comprehensive School Health, Deafness and Communication Disorders, Diabetes, Digestive Diseases, Disease Prevention/Health Promotion, Epilepsy Education and Prevention, Health Promotion and Education, Kidney and Urologic Diseases, Oral Health, Prenatal Smoking Cessation, Weight Control.

Patient Advocate Foundation
"is a national non-profit organization that serves as an active liaison between the patient and their insurer, employer and/or creditors to resolve insurance, job discrimination and/or debt crisis matters relative to their diagnosis through case managers, doctors and attorneys." Patients can fill out a form to request the assistance of a case worker, but there are also detailed documents that recommend how to deal with insurance companies and employers.

Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
(ODPHP), Web site is worth a look. Find sources for literature dealing with the progress of the Healthy People 2000 Project.

Family Doctor.org
from the American Academy of Family Physicians discusses numerous health topics, drug infor, alternative remedies and herbal medicine, and a directory of Family Physicians with Web sites. The Self-Care feature is a flow chart for deciding what condition you may have starting from a specific symptom.

Intelihealth
has fairly long, readable articles whose medical content is reviewed by the Faculty of the Harvard Medical School. Articles end with links to additional sites. Many informative features such as the the Body by the Numbers.

Noah
is a very useful site that combines original content and links to other content sources. The Topical Menu of Diseases is a good place to start. It will direct you to information about aging, AIDS, Alternative Medicine, Cancer, Diabetes, STD, Personal Health, Heart Disease, and Stroke. The navigational menus always seem to be there when you need them.

Noah has a number of unique features. Many of the articles are available in Spanish and users can click on the language icons to switch between English and Spanish. The articles from the National Cancer Institute's excellent PDQ database have been translated into Spanish. Since it is support by many New York City institutions NYU, CUNY, METRO, NYAM, NYPL, and the Queens Borough Public Library, it is strong on health care and problems related to the City.

ClinicalTrials.gov
has about 4,000 trials, mostly those sponsored by the NIH. Those from other government agencies, private organizations, and pharmaceutical companies will be added soon. Browse by condition or use search function for a specific entry. Requirements for participation in trials and contact information is given, but patients cannot apply to enter a trial at this web site.

CenterWatch Clinical Trials Listing Service
has over 7,500 drug trials that are browsable by general disease categories that are broken down by State. Also, users can search for specific diseases. Each trial entry gives qualifying criteria for patient entry and address of the organization conducting the trial.

Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults
has full and summary reports in PDF format. Tips for controlling weight and other information are on the Web pages. Look up your body mass index(BMI) on a calculator or chart. A BMI of 25 or more puts you in the overweight category. From the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

AM A Physician Select
gives consumers basic biographical information about 650,000 MDs and DOs in the United States. Information includes degree date, university, location and dates of residency training, type of practice, address, phone, institution, and speciality. Specialities are self reported. "Practice specialties are not necessarily consistent with physcians' graduate medical training and or board certification." Search by physician's name or by state and city for a specialist. The services and training of all the medical specialities are described. The American Medical Association has provided this resource, which will answer many of the most frequently asked questions about physicians.

Board Certified Pediatricians
can be found by name or searched by city and pediatric sub-speciality.

American Board of Medical Specialties - Verify Certification
Enter physician's name to see in which specialties he/she is certified. The ability to search by speciality or geographicall has been withdrawn.

Docinfo from the Federation of State Medical Boards
reports if any disciplinary action has been taken against a physician. Cost is $9.95 per physician report.

US News' America's Best Hospitals
ranks 188 hospitals in 17 different medical specialities. Search by region, state, and speciality. "To be eligible for ranking, a hospital first had to meet at least one of three standards: membership in the Council of Teaching Hospitals; affiliation with a medical school; or having at least nine items of medical technology from a master list of 17" Rank methodology is more objective than many other attempts at rankings. Criteria include mortality, nurse/patient ratios, and selecton by board certified specialist physicians. As with with most rankings the prestigious big names win again.

Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy 17th Edition
is a standard print resource for physicians and consumers, all of which has been load on the Web by the Merck Pharmaceutical Company. It's convenient to use online with a table of contents and index, but no search engine. .

American Lung Association
has many substantial articles geared for the layman about lung diseases, asthma, enviromental health, and smoking. Frames versions of pages are being developed as well as an online version of the Association's smoking cessation program.

Learn CPR
gives clear instructions in text and drawings about how to save lives. Written by Dr. Mickey Eisenberg M.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington and Director of the Emergency Medicine Service at the the University of Washington Medical Center.

American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology
has many Tips to Remember for consumers on what to do to avoid or at least minimize allergenic conditions and asthma. The tips are based on printed brochures that can be ordered from the organization. The main Patient/Public Page has additional links for allergy information.

Joint Pain
has informative articles with excellent images of problems with wrists, shoulders, backs, and knees. Symptoms, diagnosis, and courses of treatment are discussed in an easily understood format. From the Medical Multimedia Group.

National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health
has annotated bibliographies on child and maternal topics. Also, the Database of organizations is an extensive directory of organizations that offer help and information about child and maternal needs.

Directory of Hospice Services
Type in a State then a county and a list of hospice organizations that serve that county will be generated. Information includes name, city, phone, and contact person. Provided by the National Hospice Organization.
