Report of the Expert Committee on the Diagnosis and Classification of Diabetes Mellitus
was published in Diabetes Care Volume 21  Supplement 1 (American Diabetes Association: Clinical Practice Recommendations 1998). The report recommends that diabetes be diagnosed based on etiological characteristics, replacing the traditional insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent labels.
