- Comparison of Health Information Mega Sites
- compares the "25 Top" Sites using design, searching capability, and content criteria. Picks the Best Three in design and Content.
- Medical World Search
- indexes over 100k selected Web pages that specialize in medical topics. This improves the the chances of finding relevant medical information. The search techniques are a bit cumbersome though. Unless UMLS terms are used, users should enter only one word per search and then combine words in an additional boolean search modification.
- Health and Human Services' Health Finder
- consolidates links from "databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as the government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce
reliable health information for the public" Some documents are online and many others can be ordered from the agencies catalogs.
- OMNI
- "is a gateway to Internet resources in medicine, biomedicine, allied health, health management and related topics. We try to provide comprehensive coverage of the UK resources in this area and access to the best resources worldwide. By a process of selection, evaluation and description we are continuously updating our collection." You can search by keyword or MESH Headings. The abstracts are well written.
- Google
- is our current favorite Web search engine. It has few options so it's easy to use. All words are ANDed with no truncation of root words. Users can do a pharse search by using quotation marks. Google has very effective algorithms that increase the chances of retrieving relevant Web sites. Over 1 billion Web pages have been indexed. The Link: URL feature allows a user to retrieve all pages that have cited that URL. It's very hany for seeing which pages have links to your pages
- Guide to Meta-Search Engines
- Jian Liu at Indiania University defines what a meta engine is and gives the links to the major meta engines along with concise descriptions about how they work.
- Debriefing
- Cyber 411
- sends search requests to 16 major search engines. It's easy to use and has good response time, but posting are limited to titles and URLs only, no content summaries
- SavvySearch
- allows the user to select from various categories of search engines. For example the Health category searches HealthAtoZ, Healthy Ideas, drkoop.com, healthfinder, Intelihealth; the Engines category searches 13 of the top comprehensive search sites. Has good response time and annotations.
- Scout Toolkit - Searchable Indexes
- reviews the scope and how each of the best-known search engines work. Covers:
AltaVista
Excite HotBot
Infoseek
Lycos
WebCrawler
Also Meta-searchers:
MetaCrawler, SavvySearch, and search.com.
Gives links to search instructions that are available at each search site. The
Scout Internet Project at Wisconsin also reviews other tools like Subject Catalogs, Annotated Directories,
Subject Guides, and Specialized Directories.
Remember that search engines work differently from each other, so read the instructions posted at each engine site.
- Northern lights
- is another search engine that indexes a very large number of pages. It's not reviewed by Scout, but it's also worth a try.
- Search Engine Features Charts
- allows quick comparison of all kinds of specs; including number of pages indexed, currentness, how indexed, etc.
- Search Engine Tips and Tricks
- has a useful chart that shows how to search each engine. It shows what you need to know to use the engines properly. For example, is the default operator AND or OR?
