- American Civil Liberties Union
- is an excellent starting point for hot legal issues, Free expression on the Internet, Court decisions, and First Admendment issues. The site has links to many other useful resources.
- Law Guru
- has basic advise about when to get a lawyer, how to file suit in small claims court, and meta search engine that lets choose from over 200 legal resources on the Web. Most of the essays are based on California law.
- GPO Access on the Web
- from the Government Printing Office has search access to full text from the Federal Register - 1994-97, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), US Code, Congressional Record - 1992-97,
Congressional Bills for 103d-105th Congresses (1993-1998),
Congressional Record Index (1992-97), General Accounting Office GAO 'blue book' reports, History of Bills - 1994-97, Public Laws - 104th Congress, and Unified Agenda - 1994-96, Budget of the US, 1997-98. Try the
Purdue or
University of California Alternative Sites, if the SuDoc site is busy. Their offerings of databases are very similar.
- U.S. House of Representatives Internet Law Library
- connects users to a vast array of legal and legislative resources. Especially notable are the full text of the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register. Also, included are sources for State Laws, Laws of foreign countries, international law, treaties, and directories for attorney's, law firms both in the US and other English speaking countries.
- US Congress Legislation
- from the Thomas Server at the Library of Congress has full-text, summaries, and histories of all recently introduced or enacted Bills from the 103rd and 104th Congresses. Also, check the
Hot Bills Page.
- Code of Federal Regulations
- " is a codification of the general and permanent rules
published in the Federal Register by the Executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government. " All 50 Titles are available on the Web. Search all titles as a unit, retrieve a known citation, or search within a specific Title or Volume. One-fourth of the titles are updated quarterly. Back editions(1996-97) are maintained as historical records.
- Complete US Government Manual
- is fully searchable, but the printed version is easier to use because large blocks of text are retrieved and not just the text in proximity to search hits.

- U. S. Monthly Catalog Jan 1994-
- catalogs a large proportion of US government documents. The search interface is very effective. You can search by full text, title words, publication year, SuDoc number, Depository item number, or GPO sales stock number. After locating document records, searchers can then Locate Depository Libraries in their region by zip code or telephone area codes. The
Depository Library Program has
"nearly 1,400 Federal depository libraries located throughout the United States and its territories, at least one in every Congressional District. All provide free public access to a wide variety of Federal government information, in both print and electronic formats, and have expert staff available to assist users."

- has many law sources, but especially nice is the Full United States Code

- has links to many Federal Government servers, including NTIS document delivery information.
- Census Bureau Home Page
- is a little confusing. Starting with the A to Z Subject Page is a more direct route to information. Also try the abbreviated version of the Statistical Abstract of the US . The
Look-up Form Search can retrieve Census data from the State, MSA, County or down to the Census Tract Level. The user customizes data retrieval by using a multi-layered menu.

- Forms from the Feds

- has many informative documents on-line in text format and information for ordering the printed version. Topics covered include cars, real estate, health, nutrition, etc. Produced by the
U.S. General Services Administration.
- US Patent and Trademark Office
- has detailed information about how to apply for patents, forms and the operations of the USPTO. You can also Search US Patent Bibliographic Database from 1976 to present. The search form is straight forward and enables field searching. Only abstracts and bibliographic data are on-line, but you can order patents for only $3.00 for the basic USPS delivery.

- IBM Intellectual Property Network

IBM provides access to "over 27 years of U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) patent descriptions and over 1.4 million European Patent Office and World Intellectual Property Office patents and applications. This site also makes available for free the images of nearly all the U.S. patents over the last 24 years and the images of the EPA and WIPO documents. The first entries date back to January 5, 1971." After looking at retrieved title and abstracts users can order complete patents. Prices start at $2.50.
Search options include by patent number, boolean textword and text search. Easy to use and good response time.
- Japanese Patent Services
- provided by a commercial vendor, International Science & Technology Associates, offers database searching, document delivery, and translations for Patents from 1993.
- State Line
- has news and statistics for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Compare States by expenditures, taxation, demographics, prisons, education, etc.
- State of West Virginia Home Page
- is a gateway to the State agencies on the Web as well as other organizations in the West Virginia.
