What is SDI?

SDI is an monthly literature update service. A search is executed monthly against a particular NLM file. Usually the file chosen is the SDILINE file, which contains only the current month's data from Medline. All previous data is deleted, so you will get only the new citations for the current month. You can also search monthly files from Cancerline, Avline, Catline, Health, Popline, or Toxline.

The name of storesearch determines what file will be searched and the output format. Names must start with letter and a three digit number. Any character string may follow to complete the name. Storesearches not following these naming requirements will not be processed.

S010 my search name

The Letter determines the File:

S for SDI Medline
A for AvLine
B for Catline
C for Cancer
H for Health
P for Popline
T for Toxline

Searchers must fill out a SDI Form to start the service. Call the MEDLARS Service Desk (800-638-8480), which is staffed from 8:30am to 11pm ET, Monday-Friday, and from 8:30 am to 5 pm, Saturdays. For assistance.

Search Procedure in Brief

  • Do a Storesearch
  • The next day, do a Display to see if the search strategy is correct.
  • If correct, you are set and search will be executed monthly.
  • If incorrect, do Purgesearch . You cannot edit a Storesearch at this point.
  • Do Another Storesearch, using the correct search strategy.
The instructions given below were downloaded from MEDLARS using the Explain Command. They have been converted to HTML format with very little editing of content.

    Useful Commands for SDI

The Storesearch command is used to key in and store search strategies for monthly SDI processing. I can also be used Online for regular searching in any file that is compatible with Medline parameters.

The formulation may be up to 25 search statements, and may Include subheadings commands as well as any inverted search. The result of the stored search is the list of documents matching The highest numbered search statement in the series. The search is Given a name; later, when the search has been added to the file, it May be executed online or in offsearch mode by giving its name and Qualifying it by '(sn)', e.g.:

parkinsonism (sn) and review and not less than 740101 (da)

to store a search, type 'storesearch'. The program will ask you For the search name, and for the online response you wish while Storing it. You will then enter *sts* mode, and may enter search Statements, print commands, erasebacks, and any other Function except 'restack', 'print off-line', or 'elements' commands.

when you are finished, enter the command 'finished' to leave *sts* Mode and complete the storesearch command. The program will ask you Whether you wish the search stored or not, or deleted. If you Wish to correct any errors in the search, answer no; then use eraseback And reenter those statements that are to be changed. If you wish to Change the search name at that time, you may re-enter it as follows:

    prog: ok? (yes/no/cancel)
    user:
    - ->searchname = newname
    prog: ok? (yes/no/cancel)
    user:
    yes

the search will be stored that evening and will be available for Use on the following day. To ensure that the search has been stored, Type 'display ----' where the searchname replaces the dashes. Do not Qualify the searchname with the '(sn)' in the 'display' command. the 'storesearch cancel' command, when issued after any 'user:' Cue during the actual storing of a search, will negate the 'storesearch' Command. For instructions on how to cancel a search which is already Stored, type 'explain purgesearch'.

Note for shorthand operation of commands: as with offsearch and offline print, etc., You may enter Any parameters as keywords while being interrogated, or in the Initial command itself, e.g.:

    storesearch
    prog: searchname?
    user:
searchname = abc, onouts = nps
    prog: enter search-
    -- or even --
storesearch searchname = abc, onouts = none
    prog: enter search-
    *sts* ss 1/ c?
keywords may not be entered when in actual *sts* mode.

The Purgesearch command may be used to eliminate a stored search from The storesearch file. You need only provide the name of the search, And it will be purged. The search must actually exist in the file to Use the purgesearch command: i.e., it must be executable and Displayable. If the search you wish to purge has not yet been Added to the file (almost always an overnight process), you cannot Purge it. However, you may re-enter it with a new name at any time.

To use the command, type 'purgesearch'. The program will ask you for The searchname, and will ask you for a second verification of the Purge command (since it cannot be withdrawn). Or you may enter the Search name in the command: e.g., 'purgesearch S009 charmethodology'.

Saving a search for online use There are two commands for saving a search formulation that is to be Used online: savesearch and save. The savesearch command is used Before you enter the formulation, and all terms typed during the Savesearch procedure will be saved whether they have postings or not. The save command is used after the desired terms have already been Entered; search statements having no postings are not saved. To initiate a savesearch:

    prog: enter search-
    *sts* ss 1/c?

Type in your search formulation. When you execute the saved search Online later, only the retrieval from the last search statement will Appear. Therefore, all search statements must be logically pulled Together in the last ss number. when you have completed your formulation, type 'finished'. The Program will request a searchname. This name can be up to 30 alpha- Betic and numeric characters long, and may contain no special characters Or logical operators (or words that are meaningful to the program such As command names). to execute a search saved with either command, use the searchname Followed by the qualifier '(sn)': hormone technics (sn) to review the search formulation, use the display command. because saved searches are kept in the unified user specification File (uusf), the 'list' and 'remove' instructions are used to list and To delete your saved searches.

    Save List
prog: you now have 2 saved searches
    hormone technics
    disease states
there is 90% free space in your savesearch area.
    user: save hormone technics remove
prog: saved search 'hormone technics' deleted.

The Display command: This command prints the search terms from a saved or stored search, Or one or more search statements from the current session and the Database against which the search(s) have been performed. Multiple Search statements are displayed in increasing numerical order.

    user: display
prog: search formulation beginning at ss 1:
(exp pituitary hormones.: (mn) or exp
estrogens.: (mn)) -- 1232 items found in medline.
search formulation beginning at ss 2:
    (exp immunologic technics.: (mn))
    --2192 items found in back85
no subheadings applied to any search statement

To display the terms of a specific search statement, use its number With the command: display 12 To display a saved or stored search, use the searchname: display hormone technics The number of items found and a database name will not be displayed.
