Marshall University is committed to ensuring equal access and opportunity for all students with disabilities across its academic programs, services and activities.<\/strong> The Office of Accessibility and Accommodations serves as the university-wide resource responsible for partnering with students to determine and facilitate reasonable accommodations, assistive technology, and auxiliary aids and services. Through this collaborative process, the office ensures that approved students with disabilities receive appropriate and legally required accommodations in a timely manner and at no cost, supporting full participation in the university\u2019s educational environment.<\/p>\n

Faculty <\/strong>are legally mandated under the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act to implement approved student accommodations. They must provide authorized academic adjustments (e.g., extended time, note-taking, and allow audio recording) to ensure equal access, maintain confidentiality, and not alter fundamental course standards or refuse, without legal basis, to follow authorized accommodation letters. Office of Accessibility and Accommodations will send the Notification of Accommodations to faculty as a student who has been approved for accommodations submits them.<\/p>\n

Students<\/strong> are responsible for self-identifying their disability to the Office of Accessibility and Accommodation office, providing current documentation, and requesting accommodations in a timely manner.<\/p>\n

Key student responsibilities<\/strong> include:<\/p>\n

  • Self-Identify and Register<\/strong>: Students must contact the OAA office directly to disclose their disability, rather than waiting for the institution to inquire.<\/li>\n
  • Provide Documentation<\/strong>: Students must submit up-to-date documentation from a qualified professional that outlines functional limitations and supports the need for accommodations.<\/li>\n
  • Request Accommodations Annually\/Semester<\/strong>: Students are responsible for requesting specific accommodations, such as extended testing time or note-taking services, in a timely manner\u2014often within the first few weeks of each semester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

    Accommodation Procedures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    *Business day is considered Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/em>
    \n*If the student does not receive a test or quiz confirmation email, it is their responsibility to follow up with OAA to confirm the scheduled exam or test.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

    \n

    Student –<\/strong> The student requests accommodations for the semester.
    \nAccommodation Request Letters are generated and emailed to the instructor of record.
    \nThe student will be unable to send a letter until an instructor is assigned to a course.
    \nStudents must resubmit accommodation requests for classes they add or change sections, even if the section change is the same instructor.
    \nIt is recommended students make an appointment to discuss the letter and their accommodations with their instructor as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

    Instructor – <\/strong>Accommodation Request Letters are emailed to the instructor of record.
    \nInstructors should review the letter as soon as possible and respond with any questions regarding the accommodations.
    \nThe OAA provides testing staff with necessary instructions; date, start time, and duration of all quizzes and tests.<\/p>\n

    Testing Staff – <\/strong>Assists students with requesting Course Accommodations; quizzes and exam requests, final exam requests; and orienting students about the procedure of testing with OAA or other support program.
    \nAssists and orients instructors in the exam request process, testing procedures, providing testing accommodations through OAA or on their own, answering specific questions with regard to their course, and what they can expect from OAA Testing.
    \nReviews Testing Requests submitted by students.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n \n \n\n \n

    \n Semester Quizzes and Tests\n <\/div>\n\n \n \n <\/path>\n <\/svg>\n <\/span>\n <\/button>\n\n \n
    \n

    Student –<\/strong> Student submits exam request to OAA at least 3 business days in advance of the quiz or test and requests each quiz or test at the same time as the rest of the class.
    \nIf the student needs an alternative testing appointment and or time, the student must first discuss and receive approval from their instructor for the alternative time before submitting a quiz or test request.
    \nStudents are sent a confirmation email that they have an approved test at the testing center within 2 business days of the scheduled exam or quiz.<\/p>\n

    Instructor –<\/strong> Instructor receives an email from OAA at least 1 day prior to the exam.
    \nInstructor will receive the Exam Notification Form from OAA.
    \nInstructor selects the exam information and submits additional instructions (Exam Instructions), passwords, and test materials.
    \nInstructor should notify the OAA Testing Center staff if there are any questions or concerns with the request or if there has been a change in the date or time of the test.
    \nThe instructor will receive another email reminder 1 day before the exam date if the exam has not been submitted\/received.
    \nExam Notification Form will need to be returned at least 24 hours prior to the test start time.<\/p>\n

    Testing Staff –<\/strong> Quiz and test requests submitted at the same start time as the class are automatically approved (pending other course conflict) and the student notified.
    \nQuiz and test requests submitted for an alternative testing appointment are reviewed by testing staff.
    \nCorresponds with students and instructors regarding any questions about the request, appointment date and time, instructions, authorized aids, or test materials.
    \nLate requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and may be canceled. Please see the Exam Scheduling and Make-Up Procedures for further information.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n \n \n\n \n

    \n Final Exams\n <\/div>\n\n \n \n <\/path>\n <\/svg>\n <\/span>\n <\/button>\n\n \n
    \n

    Student –<\/strong> The deadline to request final exams is 2 weeks prior to the first day of finals.
    \nLate requests may be processed after contacting OAA Coordinator to discuss testing options.<\/p>\n

    Instructor –<\/strong> After the request deadline has passed, instructors will be notified of exam requests for appropriate date, time, or approved alternate appointment.
    \nPlease review the final exam requests as soon as possible and notify OAA staff if there are any questions or concerns with the exam or quiz request.
    \nExam Notification Form will need to be returned at least 24 hours prior to the test start time.<\/p>\n

    Testing Staff –<\/strong> After the deadline has passed, testing staff begin to review on-time requests and correspond with instructors and students.
    \nStudents are assigned locations about one (1) week before finals begin so they know where to report.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n \n \n\n \n

    \n

    Student –<\/strong> Students are informed of any materials that can be used during exam or quiz. All other items are stored in a designated space.
    \nStudent checks in with a photo ID prior to exam or quiz.
    \nThe exam ends when the student either finishes or time runs out and they are stopped.
    \nStudents that are later than 15 minutes for exam or quiz will have their exam or quiz returned to the instructor and will need to either contact the instructor for make-up options or report to classroom to take the exam or quiz without accommodations.<\/p>\n

    Instructor –<\/strong> If any testing instructions have changed since the Exam Notification Form was completed, please contact OAA with the updated information.
    \nPlease provide contact information in case the student or OAA staff have any questions regarding the exam.<\/p>\n
