Woodson, the \u201cFather of Black History,\u201d said that the turning point in his career came during his West Virginia years, a period that included graduation from Huntington\u2019s Douglass School (1896) and subsequent service as its principal. A statue of Dr. Woodson, located at 820 Hal Greer Blvd., honors his connections to Huntington and West Virginia. One entry per student. It is free to enter.<\/p>\n<h3>Poster Entry and Guidelines<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Students are encouraged to communicate ideas and concepts of personal relevance.<\/li>\n<li>Your entry will be judged based on these criteria.<br \/>\n1) <strong>Theme:<\/strong> the extent to which your design effectively expresses this year\u2019s theme, \u201c<strong>Black Contributions to American Life and History<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\n2) <strong>Social Impact:<\/strong> the potential of your design to improve race relations and\/or preserve\/observe Black history.<br \/>\n3) Visual Impact: the expression of your idea through the composition and execution of your poster.<br \/>\n4) <strong>Statement:<\/strong> description of your research, what you learned, and factors that you considered in designing your poster.<\/li>\n<li>You may create your poster using digital tools and\/or traditional media such as letterpress, silkscreen, markers, paint, pens, collage, stitching, photography, mixed media, etc. If using traditional media, scan or photograph your entry for online submission.<\/li>\n<li>Posters should be 11 x 14 inches. The logos, above, will be added to the poster along with the winner\u2019s name. Submit only JPG or PDF formats. Images must be 24 MB or smaller.<\/li>\n<li>Submit entries and statement no later than Friday, November 4 at 10 pm<\/li>\n<li>You may download or view a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/art\/files\/BHM_FLYER_fin_2023-scaled.jpg\">printable copy of the competition rules<\/a> if you wish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Additional Important Information<\/h3>\n<p>The winning poster will be the official 2023 Black History poster of The Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum at Marshall University. A diverse committee will select the winning entry and a number of entries will be exhibited in the Student Gallery. Entries are judged anonymously. The winning student\u2019s major, hometown, and preferred name will be added to the winning poster along with logos of Marshall University and The Lyceum. The winning poster will be professionally produced and displayed on the Marshall University campus and featured on The Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum\u2019s website. Prior winning posters by Marshall students may be seen at<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/woodsonlyceum\/poster-contests\/mu-poster-competition\/\">https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/woodsonlyceum\/poster-contests\/mu-poster-competition\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The winner may be asked to respond to feedback from the review committee prior to the committee\u2019s final decision. The winner must complete paperwork in order to receive the monetary prize.
