Woodson, the \u201cFather of Black History,\u201d said that the turning point in his career came during his West Virginia years, a period that included graduation from Huntington\u2019s Douglass School (1896) and subsequent service as its principal. A statue of Dr. Woodson, located at 820 Hal Greer Blvd., honors his connections to Huntington and West Virginia. Marshall University memorialized Dr. Woodson\u2019s achievements by creating The Lyceum in his honor.<br \/>\nFor more information about The Lyceum: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/woodsonlyceum\/\">https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/woodsonlyceum\/<\/a><br \/>\nAdditional details of Woodson\u2019s life can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/scholar\/carter-g-woodson\">https:\/\/www.biography.com\/scholar\/carter-g-woodson<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n<h3>Prizes Awarded<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>$100 Prize for Poster Design by an Elementary School Student<\/li>\n<li>$100 Prize for Poster Design by a Middle School Student<\/li>\n<li>$100 Prize for Poster Design by a High School Student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Due January 31, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Theme<\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;BLACK CONTRIBUTIONS in AMERICAN LIFE and HISTORY&#8221;<\/strong> is the 2023 poster theme, which is also this year\u2019s National Black History Theme as established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.<\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>This competition is dedicated to public, private, and home-schooled K-12 students. The competition is open to students in any academic discipline. Teachers are welcomed to incorporate the competition into course learning objectives. Any student may enter independently. One entry per student. It is free to enter.<\/p>\n<h3>Poster Design<\/h3>\n<p>Students are encouraged to be creative and to explore ideas and concepts. You may create your poster using digital tools and\/or traditional media such as markers, paint, pens, collage, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Posters should be either 8 \u00bd x 11 or 11 x 14 inches.<br \/>\nYour entry will be judged based on these criteria.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>the extent to which your design effectively expresses the 2022 Black History Theme;<\/li>\n<li>the potential of your design to improve race relations and\/or preserve\/observe Black history;<\/li>\n<li>poster design quality; and<\/li>\n<li>completion of a \u201cWhat I Learned\u201d statement of at least 75 words describing what you learned during your research and considered in designing your poster.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Resources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Here is a helpful tutorial for taking and editing photographs of artwork with a phone camera: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FKgWIzvm3Hs\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FKgWIzvm3Hs<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you have any questions regarding this poster competition or your entry, contact Professor Burnis Morris at <a href=\"mailto:morrisb@marshall.edu\">morrisb@marshall.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Entry Guidelines and Checklist<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>My entry is either a JPG file or PDF no larger than 4 MB.
