Jan van Eyck\u2019s Madonna Adored by the Canon van der Paele (1436. Oil on panel, 48 x 61 7\/8\u201d Groeninge Museum, Bruges) will be our focus. This Northern Renaissance work represents the height of illusion in Van Eyck\u2019s oeuvre, and, like most of his work, is loaded with fascinating iconography.<\/p>\n

March 15th will take us into the modern era for a close look at Charles Sheeler\u2019s Church Street El (1920. Oil on canvas, 16 1\/8 x 19 1\/8\u201d. Cleveland Museum of Art). In his scant writing, Sheeler pointed to Jan van Eyck as a formative influence upon his stylistic development as a painter. Van Eyck\u2019s ability to conceal his methods was of particular interest to Sheeler. Church Street El initiates a period during which Sheeler came to understand what he wanted to express about his subject matter through the manipulation of form.<\/p>\n

This lecture will investigate Edward Sa\u00efd\u2019s concept of Orientalism by focusing on The Snake Charmer by Jean-L\u00e9on G\u00e9r\u00f4me (c. 1879, oil on canvas, 33\u201d x 48.1\u201d, The Clark Art Institute). By examining this painting through the lens of Linda Nochlin\u2019s 1983 essay \u201cThe Imaginary Orient,\u201d we will see how 19th-century Orientalist paintings not only perpetuated non-Western stereotypes but also revealed the values and attitudes of Westerners themselves.<\/p>\n
