Marshall University is celebrating \u201cAn American Milestone, the Centennial of Negro History Week\/Black History Month, 1926-2026\u201d with short, non-credit, introductory courses online that are free to the public \u2013 thanks to our generous donors. Who should register? Students enrolled in middle and high school and their teachers, college students as well as seniors and others who just want to learn about Black History and culture. Although the youngest of readers (elementary students) may require assistance from parents and teachers, there are no prerequisites for the courses. Everyone is invited to register for the courses to be taught in two terms \u2013 October 2025 and February 2026.<\/p>\n

Upon completion of each course, learners will receive a digital certificate of completion. Note that this is not an official academic undergraduate or graduate certificate from Marshall University.<\/em><\/p>\n

The American Milestone program considers the phrase \u201cBlack History\u201d an umbrella term that incorporates various areas of study \u2013 such as literature, music, art, history, culture and other disciplines and topics associated with the arts and humanities. As such, we have constructed a program that includes courses about the history of Negro History Week\/Month,\u00a0 jazz, Robert Johnson and the blues, slavery in Appalachia, poetry, health care and how to explore family histories and various other topics.<\/p>\n

Students may take just one or any number of courses. Major categories include: Black History, the Arts, Literature, Journalism, and Black Appalachia & Huntington, West Virginia area history.<\/p>\n

Starting in Spring 2026, students will have access to new Centennial Course Learning Pathways<\/strong>, designed to recognize deeper engagement across themed areas of study. These pathways are not earnable with fall-only course offerings, making spring the first opportunity to complete them. To earn a pathway, students must complete a specific number of courses in each category: 3 out of 5 in Black Music, 2 out of 4 in Literature- Language, Poetry, & Fantasy Fiction, 1 out of 3 in Black Press, 3 out of 11 in Black Appalachia and Huntington, WV-Area History, and 3 out of 9 in General Courses in Black History<\/strong>. All courses are free for learners, but those who wish to earn a digital Credly badge<\/strong> for completing a pathway can do so for a $30 fee<\/strong>, with a coupon code<\/strong>\u00a0available to reduce the cost for students, educators, and nonprofit organizations.<\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n
