It was an exciting time, just before the breakup of Ma Bell. Charlie started as a sales representative at an Executone franchise in West Virginia and quickly became the #10 sales rep in the U.S., eventually becoming the franchise president. Under Charlie’s leadership, the West Virginia branch became the top property in the national network.

Charlie Dennie developed strong expertise in Cat-5 and fiber infrastructure. Charlie led his company to become the first in West Virginia to sign the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) low-voltage contract. To this day, he is a proud, card-carrying member of I.B.E.W. Local Union 466. Over the years, Charlie gained extensive experience with union construction projects, labor contracts, grievance resolutions, craft jurisdictions, bidding, and subcontracting. With a degree in economics focused on labor, Charlie considers his hands-on work in union construction as my post-graduate education.

As the telephone industry transitioned into data services, Charlie moved his team and customers to Alpha Technologies, ensuring every staff member kept their job. Charlie initially agreed to stay with Alpha for three years, but the contract was misplaced—and he’s remained well past that term. At Alpha, Charlie played a crucial role in acquiring Union Carbide’s 80,000-square-foot data center, which marked a pivotal moment in the company’s growth. Charlie also spearheaded a project to build 35 miles of fiber in the competitive business districts of Charleston and South Charleston, WV.

In October 2020, Charlie Dennie was invited by West Virginia’s Secretary of Commerce, Ed Gaunch, to serve as the first Director of the West Virginia Office of Broadband. This role was both an honor and a challenge Charlie couldn’t refuse. However, as conditions and policies shifted, Charlie recognized it was time for new opportunities. Charlie now works as a consultant and advocate for open-access networks, helping communities and organizations navigate their broadband needs for a more connected future. Charlie also co-founded Thundercloud, a non-profit open-access broadband network serving the Huntington, WV market.

Travis Hudnall, MS in Cybersecurity

Ryan Santos-Leslie, MBA Management / Entrepreneurship

Ryan Santos-Leslie is the Chief Operating Officer at North Austin Community Outreach, a Chicago-based nonprofit that manages operations and provides consulting for the North Austin Community Center and other partner organizations.
