{"id":918,"date":"2016-12-20T14:19:21","date_gmt":"2016-12-20T19:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cob-dev\/?page_id=918"},"modified":"2025-12-04T11:50:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T16:50:02","slug":"what-is-an-internship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cob\/students\/internships-jobs\/what-is-an-internship\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an internship?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is an internship?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>An internship is a work experience that is relevant to a student\u2019s chosen major.<\/li>\n<li>An experience that should enhance a student&#8217;s academic, career, and personal development<\/li>\n<li>Supervised by a professional in the field<\/li>\n<li>An experience that can be one academic term (summer, spring, fall) or multiple academic terms in length<\/li>\n<li>Paid or unpaid, part-time or full-time<\/li>\n<li>An experience that is mutually agreed upon by the student, supervisor and\/or faculty member<\/li>\n<li>Internships might also be called a practicum or co-op.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why should my business participate in the internship program?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Internships give students the opportunity to explore careers in their chosen major, network with potential employers, and learn about jobs that are available.<\/li>\n<li>The employer also benefits from the internship by:\n<ul>\n<li>Building your potential employee pool<\/li>\n<li>Receiving additional staff assistance during peak times\/special projects<\/li>\n<li>Providing supervision experience for future managers in your company<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring a student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>See \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cob\/employers\/employer-internship-benefits\/\">Benefits of Hiring Our Students<\/a>\u201d for more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How long is the internship experience?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Internships can begin at any time but usually correspond to the fall, spring, and summer semesters.<\/li>\n<li>If a student is pursuing class credit, they must spend a minimum amount hours on the job-site (see specific program requirements) to obtain academic credit for the internship together with meeting all the other course requirements.<\/li>\n<li>However, if the student\u2019s schedule permits and the business agrees, the student may put in additional hours beyond the minimum requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Should the internship be paid?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Although the primary purpose of the internship program is to give a student relevant business experience in his or her chosen field, compensation during the internship experience is certainly an incentive.<\/li>\n<li>Monetary compensation also helps to create the atmosphere of employment.<\/li>\n<li>To date, most of the internship opportunities partnered with the internship program have provided compensation ranging from a stipend to help pay for the tuition cost of the internship to $9.00 per hour or more, depending on qualifications and class level.<\/li>\n<li>See \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cob\/employers\/compensation\/\">Compensation<\/a>\u201d for more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can interns be utilized?<\/h2>\n<p>Our LCOB students come prepared with an array of skills and are eager to learn. A few examples of internship tasks are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accounting\/Finance\n<ul>\n<li>Handle accounts payable or accounts receivable, Analyze stock market trends, Assist accountants during tax season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Human Resources\n<ul>\n<li>Develop handbooks or employee manuals, Pre-screening of applicants, Monthly newsletters, Payroll assistance, Research on regulations and compliance issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Marketing\n<ul>\n<li>Create a new marketing campaign, Create mailing lists, Design brochures or distribution materials, Conduct marketing research, Design charts and graphics to be used at a meeting or conference, Analyze sales data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is expected of me if I participate in the internship program?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The internship program expects each employer to provide meaningful duties for the student to perform that would enhance the student\u2019s understanding of his or her career area.<\/li>\n<li>See \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cob\/employers\/expectations-and-requirements\/\">Employer Expectations<\/a>\u201d for more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can I get the internship process started?<\/h2>\n<p>Complete our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cob\/files\/2016\/12\/Internship_Needs_Survey.docx\">Internship Needs Survey<\/a>\u00a0or submit a request on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cob\/employers\/employer-interest-form\/\">Employer Interest Form<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is an internship?
