{"id":817,"date":"2015-08-27T08:25:45","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T13:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cohp\/?page_id=817"},"modified":"2015-10-14T15:30:24","modified_gmt":"2015-10-14T20:30:24","slug":"health-services","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cohp\/health-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/mu-speech-and-hearing-center\/\">Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center<\/a>\u00a0(MUSHC) is an integral part of the Department of Communication Disorders which is housed within the Marshall University College of Health Professions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The (MUSHC) provides services for both children and adults, including screenings, evaluations, and treatment of disorders including but not limited to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Speech (articulation of speech sounds, dysarthria, apraxia of speech)<\/li>\n<li>Receptive and Expressive Language (childhood language impairments, language delays, aphasia)<\/li>\n<li>Pragmatics (the social use of communication)<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive Communication<\/li>\n<li>Fluency (stuttering)<\/li>\n<li>Voice and Resonance<\/li>\n<li>Augmentative and Alternative Communication<\/li>\n<li>Aural Rehabilitation<\/li>\n<li>Dysphagia (disorders of feeding and swallowing)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cwa\/\">Marshall University Center for Wellness in the Arts<\/a>\u00a0is a place where injured performing artists can be evaluated by licensed athletic trainers who have the proper knowledge and equipment to treat their injuries.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CWA was created with\u00a0three components: education, treatment and research. Many performing arts students have developed a mentality that a certain amount of pain is a part of the performer\u2019s process. We want to change the culture and educate students so they look at pain as a problem and treat it accordingly so they can enjoy a\u00a0successful career in the performing arts.<\/p>\n<p>Since August 2014, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cohp\/\">College of Health Professions<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/cam\/\">College of Arts and Media<\/a>\u00a0have offered performing and visual arts students the chance to work with athletic trainers to prevent injury from occurring during performances.<\/p>\n<p>In the upcoming academic year, the CWA will offer the following services:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Injury prevention sessions with certified athletic trainers<\/li>\n<li>Performance anxiety workshops with health scientists<\/li>\n<li>Nutrition and weight management training with registered dietitians<\/li>\n<li>Agility and mobility training with exercise scientists<\/li>\n<li>Baseline hearing assessments, vocal education and treatment with speech-language pathologists<\/li>\n<li>Vision training to improve reaction times in performances with exercise physiologists<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/exercise-science\/laboratories\/\">Exercise Science Laboratories<\/a> are housed in Gullickson Hall and include the Exercise Physiology Lab, the Muscle Physiology Lab and the Clinical Exercise Physiology Lab. Each of these\u00a0provide undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on\u00a0opportunities to work in the clinical setting.
