Jones, Jr. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Marshall University.<\/strong> He is also the inaugural Director of HerdWork Humanities, a paid internship program for humanities students funded by a $1.8 million Mellon Foundation grant. Each year, HerdWork places up to 75 liberal arts majors in paid internships with area nonprofits, paired with a career-readiness course, credit-bearing internship courses, and faculty and site mentoring.<\/p>\n At Marshall, Dr. Jones has led the creation of the nation\u2019s first M.D.\/M.A. dual degree in Communication Studies and the launch of the department\u2019s online B.A.<\/p>\n Dr. Jones came to Marshall University in 2023 after 13 years as a faculty member at Eastern Illinois University, where he was promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor to Professor, served as the Basic Course Director for 10 years, coordinated the online degree completion program, and supervised the dual credit speech programs.<\/p>\n Dr. Jones was a first-generation college student<\/strong> and is committed to supporting and mentoring students through the challenges that they experience as they navigate the world of higher education. He received Marshall\u2019s John and Frances Rucker Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award in 2026.<\/p>\n Dr. Jones is an award-winning teacher<\/strong> who has won teaching awards as a graduate teaching assistant, tenure-track faculty member, and tenured professor. He was nominated twice to the U.S. Professors of the Year program associated with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.<\/p>\n Dr. Jones is also an award-winning textbook author.<\/strong> In 2019, Dr. Jones’s book\u00a0Communication in the Real World\u00a0<\/em>(2nd edition) was honored with the Textbook of Distinction Award by the Basic Course Division of the National Communication Association.<\/p>\n The third edition of Communication in the Real World<\/a><\/em> was published by Flat World in 2023. The 3rd Edition is a substantial revision that adds hundreds of new citations from recent research and 90 engaging videos chosen to supplement the content.
