{"id":1258,"date":"2021-08-09T13:33:33","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T18:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/?page_id=1258"},"modified":"2023-09-18T13:30:15","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T18:30:15","slug":"hooding-ceremony-for-the-master-of-science-in-communication-disorders-class-of-2021","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/hooding-ceremony-for-the-master-of-science-in-communication-disorders-class-of-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Hooding Ceremony for the Master of Science in Communication Disorders Class of 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"w-full xl:container mx-auto px-6\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/Hooding-2021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1262\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/Hooding-2021-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/Hooding-2021-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/Hooding-2021-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/Hooding-2021.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/a>The Department of Communication Disorders at Marshall University (MUCD) held its annual hooding ceremony for the Master of Science in Communication Disorders Class of 2021 on Saturday, August 7, 2021 in the Memorial Student Center.\u00a0 Thirty-four graduates were joined by family and friends as they were presented awards, well wishes, and were hooded by a faculty member of their choosing.<\/p>\n<p>When addressing the class of 2021 and those in attendance, MUCD Department Chair and Graduate Program Director Pam Holland stated, \u201cPerseverance, collaboration, dedication, passion, and resilience are the traits that I would use to describe this class,\u201d due to their tenacity in completing the program when challenged by a world pandemic and record-breaking ice storm.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker for the ceremony was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/alumni\/november-2020-alumni-spotlight-jaime-basham-whittington\/\"> Jaime Basham, M.S. CCC-SLP<\/a>, who received her Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Marshall University in 2007 and is currently a medical student at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.\u00a0 In her address, Student Dr. Basham reflected on her training at Marshall University and on her career as a speech-language pathologist.\u00a0 She presented the top 10 reasons to be a speech-language pathologist and encouraged the Class of 2021 to remain passionate about wanting to change the world.\u00a0 She challenged the graduates to choose the path within the field that allows them to be themselves before congratulating and applauding them for their work.<\/p>\n<p>The Class of 2021 nominated classmate Hanna Taylor as their class speaker.\u00a0 Hanna\u2019s theme for her address was \u201ctogether,\u201d stating, \u201cSince August 26, 2019, we have spent mornings, evenings, days, weeks, months \u2013 together.\u00a0 We have supported each other through so many emotions and milestones, and what now feels like two short \u2013 or maybe they still feel kind of long \u2013 years.\u201d\u00a0 After thanking the faculty and staff in the Department of Communication Disorders, she encouraged her classmates to remember the challenges they overcame during graduate school as motivation to succeed in their career.<\/p>\n<p>Retiring Professor Kelly Harlow then presented the following awards:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/sydney-a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1264\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/sydney-a-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/sydney-a-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/sydney-a.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/><\/a>The <strong>Robert D. Olson Award<\/strong> for the Graduate Assistant who exhibits strong work ethic, a great attitude, and who always goes above and beyond her duties for the department was presented to Sydney Hancock.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/ggh-award-2021-a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1261\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/ggh-award-2021-a-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/ggh-award-2021-a-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/communication-disorders\/files\/ggh-award-2021-a.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/><\/a>Hanna Taylor, Jillian Clemens, and Alaina Leadman received the<strong> George G.
