Know where these documents are and refer to them regularly.<\/li>\n<li>If your offer letter specifies expectations for tenure or promotion, add it to your file of relevant policies and expectations.<\/li>\n<li>If you received credit toward tenure or promotion for prior work at another institution, document that work in the same way you document your work at Marshall.<\/li>\n<li>Review requirements for Teaching, Research, and Service, including how many and what types of products are expected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"teaching\">Teaching<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop and maintain effective teaching practices.<\/li>\n<li>Seek and respond to feedback from students and peers.<\/li>\n<li>Engage in activities that support instructional improvement.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to student learning through mentoring, advising, and research supervision where appropriate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"scholarship-and-professional-activity\">Scholarship and Professional Activity<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop a clear and sustainable scholarly or creative agenda.<\/li>\n<li>Understand expectations for the quantity, quality, and impact of scholarly products in your discipline.<\/li>\n<li>Present your work at appropriate conferences and venues.<\/li>\n<li>Regularly apply for external funding relevant to your field.<\/li>\n<li>Develop collaborations with colleagues outside your institution to enhance productivity and expand professional opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"service-and-professional-engagement\">Service and Professional Engagement<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Prior to tenure, limit service commitments so you can establish your teaching and scholarly or creative work, while contributing appropriately to departmental, college, and professional responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li>As a general guideline before tenure, consider serving on:\n<ul>\n<li>one department activity or responsibility<\/li>\n<li>one college or university committee<\/li>\n<li>one community or professional activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"mentoring\">Mentoring<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Meet with a variety of senior colleagues within and outside your department to gain different perspectives on tenure and promotion.<\/li>\n<li>Identify at least one mentor in each of the areas\n<ul>\n<li>teaching<\/li>\n<li>research<\/li>\n<li>service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Meet regularly with your mentors, including any assigned by your department.<\/li>\n<li>Meet regularly with your chair or division head to discuss your progress toward tenure and promotion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"professional-development\">Professional Development<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Attend department, college, and university programs designed for pre-tenure faculty.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in workshops, training, and other activities that support teaching, research, and professional growth.<\/li>\n<li>Engage with your professional community to stay current in your field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"documentation-and-record-keeping\">Documentation and Record Keeping<\/h2>\n<p>Preparing your portfolio will be much easier if materials are collected and updated each year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Treat each annual evaluation as documentation of your progress toward tenure and promotion.<\/li>\n<li>Start a P&amp;T portfolio document in your first year and update it annually.<\/li>\n<li>Save documentation continuously across all areas, including:\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching\n<ul>\n<li>student course evaluations, available through MyMU and MU BERT<\/li>\n<li>peer and chair observation reports<\/li>\n<li>teaching development activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Scholarship and Professional Activity\n<ul>\n<li>publications and creative works<\/li>\n<li>manuscript submissions &#8212; accepted and rejected<\/li>\n<li>conference attendance and presentations, including dates, locations, and copies of conference programs listing your contribution<\/li>\n<li>grant submissions &#8212; funded and unfunded<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Service\n<ul>\n<li>department, college, and university committees<\/li>\n<li>professional and community activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring and Student Supervision (include student names and project titles)\n<ul>\n<li>independent studies<\/li>\n<li>undergraduate and graduate research<\/li>\n<li>theses and projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Professional Development\n<ul>\n<li>workshops, training, and faculty development programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Awards and Recognition\n<ul>\n<li>honors, awards, and other professional recognition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Maintain records of courses taught and enrollments.
