Funded by the National Science Foundation (award #2349289), AMPS gives students a chance to spend the summer as full-time, paid researchers working alongside faculty mentors on cutting-edge topics in math and physics.<\/p>\n<p>From June through July, participants tackled exciting projects including graph theory and linear algebra with <a href=\"https:\/\/sudiptamallik.com\/\">Dr. Sudipta Mallik<\/a>, numerical semigroup rings with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/math\/profile\/aleksandra-sobieska-snyder\/\">Dr. Aleksandra Sobieska<\/a>, textile dye filtration with Dr. Sean McBride, binary star mergers with <a href=\"https:\/\/mupages.marshall.edu\/sites\/mhamilton\/#gsc.tab=0\">Dr. Maria Hamilton<\/a>, and disease modeling with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/math\/profile\/chanaka-kottegoda\/\">Dr. Chanaka Kottegod<\/a>a. Their summer launched with a welcome cookout hosted by program organizers <a href=\"https:\/\/tomcuchta.com\/\">Dr. Tom Cuchta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/math\/profile\/stephen-deterding\/\">Dr. Stephen Deterding<\/a> and wrapped up with a poster session presented to the College of Science.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to their research, students from Dr. McBride\u2019s group took science on the road with physics outreach activities at local schools, and the entire group took a field trip to the Green Bank Telescope\u2014the world\u2019s largest fully steerable radio telescope.<\/p>\n<p>The AMPS REU is part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/initiatives\/reu\/search?f%5B0%5D=reu_research_area%3A25741\">national network of mathematics-focused REU sites<\/a> and will continue at Marshall through 2027.
