The highly competitive internship, sponsored by the American Cancer Society Center for Innovation in Cancer Research Training and Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, provided Fletcher with 10 weeks of full-time biomedical research experience in Washington, D.C.

Working directly with a principal investigator, Fletcher contributed to research focused on testing a new medication for breast cancer survivors. The project aims to reduce chemotherapy-related side effects and improve quality of life for patients. Through the experience, she developed skills in laboratory research, critical thinking, troubleshooting, and scientific communication. “It helped shape me into a better pre-medical student because I’ve learned how to think critically, troubleshoot problems, address a superior, and turn a research question into a study,” Fletcher said. “Every skill will be beneficial in medical school.”

Fletcher, who expects to graduate in 2028, said Marshall University’s supportive environment helped prepare her for the opportunity. She also encouraged fellow students to pursue opportunities that stretch their abilities. “I really enjoyed this experience, and I encourage others to step out of their comfort zones and try new things,” she said. The CURE-M program will continue to support Fletcher through a year of mentorship, career development opportunities, and scientific seminars during the 2026-27 academic year.

Read more about Laney's Marshall Moment

Marshall University Biological Sciences student Laney Fletcher was one of just 10 students selected from a pool of 760 applicants for Georgetown University’s Cancer Undergraduate Research Experience and Mentorship (CURE-M) program.
