ABOUT THIS AWARD
The Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to open the application period for a fellowship opportunity for Marshall University faculty. Made possible by a gift from Charles B. and Mary Jo Locke Hedrick, the $5,000 fellowship will give a full-time faculty member the opportunity to pursue a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project, collaborate with the CTL staff in shaping the strategic plan for campus-wide faculty development, and develop a niche area of expertise in faculty development, thus adding to the programming regularly offered by the Center. This is the first faculty fellowship of its kind at Marshall University. The Hedrick Faculty Teaching Fellowship promises to fulfill the twin goals of CTL: empowering faculty in their teaching and research, and engaging students in high impact learning.
Full-time faculty on a 3-year term appointment, tenure-track appointment, or tenured appointment are eligible to apply. (Term faculty must apply during the first or second year of the 3-year term.)
The Hedrick Faculty Teaching Fellowship Program aims to make leadership positions in faculty development available to full-time faculty. In collaborating with CTL staff to shape the Center’s strategic plan for campus-wide faculty development, the Fellow will also develop a niche area of faculty development expertise and build his or her profile in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). The Fellow will design, facilitate and promote a variety of high-impact instructional development programming initiatives for Marshall faculty, including but not limited to the following:
- Facilitate a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) on a topic related to the Fellow’s SoTL research interests;
- Design and deliver a suite of professional development opportunities for faculty which are informed by assessment data and other research on student learning; and
- Design and facilitate teaching and learning forums that assist faculty in addressing one or more of the MU Baccalaureate Degree Profile outcomes in courses in the major, or non-CT courses.
The appointment to become a Hedrick Faculty Teaching Fellow is for one year and runs from August 17, 2019, to August 16, 2020. In addition to a $5,000 stipend, the Fellow will receive a 3-credit course reassignment or equivalent during the fall semester of the appointment and is expected to be “in residence” in the Center for Teaching and Learning an average of 9 hours per week during the Fall 2019 semester, 3 hours per week during the Spring 2020 semester, and 9 hours per week during one Summer 2020 session (Fellow’s choice). The Fellow will also present at the iPED: Inquiring Pedagogies Fall Teaching Conference in August 2020.
The cycle of the fellowship year is as follows:
- Fall 2019: Research and Development
- Responsibilities: Initiate FLC, design professional development experiences, in-residence approximately 9 hours per week.
- Support: CTL Office and Staff; Course release
- Spring 2020: Implementation
- Responsibilities: Continue FLC, deliver PD offerings, initiate FLC project in classroom, in-residence average of 3 hours per week
- Support: CTL Office and Staff, 1/2 of stipend
- Summer 2020: Analysis, Reflection, and Dissemination
- Responsibilities: Variable (e.g., manuscript preparation, conference proposals), iPED 2019 proposal and presentation, in-residence average of 9 hours per week in one summer term.
- Support: CTL Office and Staff, 1/2 of stipend
Ideally, after the fellowship year, the Fellow will serve on the CTL advisory board and will continue to provide high-demand faculty development programming to MU faculty as needed. (Past fellows will be compensated for any future professional development services.)
HOW TO APPLY

- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (max 500 words): How has scholarship on teaching and learning informed your teaching practice? What general area of inquiry or specific research question in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) would you like to explore during the fellowship year?
- Faculty Learning Community (max 200 words): The Fellow will facilitate a year-long Faculty Learning Community (FLC) on a topic related to SoTL research interests. What topic would you propose and why? How would you recruit 6-10 faculty members to participate in this area of inquiry?
- Prior Experience (max 200 words): What prior experience do you bring to the challenge of teaching students to become fluent in the outcome you checked above?
- Residency (max 50 words): The Fellow is expected to be “in residence” in CTL an average of 9 hours/week in the Fall semester, 3 hours per week in the spring semester, and 9 hours per week during one Summer session. What is your proposed residency schedule for each term?
