While these conditions exist throughout the United States, they tend to be overrepresented in films set in Appalachia, which can cause viewers to believe various social ills are inherent to Appalachia. In contrast, Appalachian-produced films, while acknowledging these same problems, tend to more thoroughly explore contributing causes and exhibit a greater degree of empathy for those affected by them.
