{"id":7799,"date":"2023-08-17T11:16:42","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T15:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/ctl\/?page_id=7799"},"modified":"2024-01-09T10:04:06","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T15:04:06","slug":"teaching-transformative-texts-faculty-learning-community-2023-2024","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/ctl\/teaching-transformative-texts-faculty-learning-community-2023-2024","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Transformative Texts Faculty Learning Community &#8211; 2023-2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How does teaching transformative texts\u2014texts that have moved people, impacted lives, and inspired change, such as Dr. Martin Luther King\u2019s \u201cLetter from Birmingham Jail\u201d\u2014to undergraduate students, in ALL majors, change the way that we teach and our students learn? How can we pair classical texts with texts from students\u2019 chosen fields, including STEM fields and business, to make general education requirements have a lasting impact on their education and their lives?<\/p>\n<p>In this Faculty Learning Community, we will begin by reading and discussing Roosevelt Mont\u00e1s\u2019 <em>Rescuing Socrates: How the Great Books Changed My Life and Why They Matter for a New Generation <\/em>(2021). This memoir uses literary reflection to recount Mont\u00e1s\u2019 experiences as an undergraduate and then professor at Columbia University\u2019s Center for the Core Curriculum. We will then use excerpts of transformative texts to workshop teaching these texts to undergraduate students from all majors.<\/p>\n<p>This FLC will meet five times in Fall 2023. All meetings will be from <strong>10:00-11:30 am <\/strong>in the<strong> CTL Teaching Commons <\/strong>(Old Main 109).
