Marshall University LGBTQ+ Alumni Mentor Program

The Marshall University (MU) LGBTQ+ Alumni Mentor Program (MU LAMP) was established by the President’s Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to enable Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, or Queer/Questioning students to evolve in their identities and grow personally and professionally while attending Marshall University. The program is funded by a Diversity for Equity Grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

PLEASE NOTE: MU LAMP may only accept twenty students and twenty mentors during the Spring 2019 semester. Applications for both students and mentors are due by Wednesday, December 12th, or until twenty student and/or mentor applications have been received.   Once approved, students and mentees will be contacted via email by Tuesday, December 18th.

The instructional objectives of MU LAMP are to:

  • Foster mentoring relationships between self-identified LGBTQ+ students and alumni/allies to offer support, guidance, and resources;
  • Support students as they prepare to “come out” among their social groups and family;
  • Support students who feel they are unable to “come out” as LGBTQ;
  • Expose students to the diverse out-of-classroom lives of LGBTQ+ alumni and allies;
  • Endorse intergenerational links with current students and alumni/allies; and
  • Provide resources as issues of sexual identity are explored

The goals of the MU LAMP mentees are to:

  • Attend mentee orientation;
  • Commit to MULAMP for one academic year;
  • Establish contact with MULAMP mentor at least once monthly;
  • Respect mentor and their profession and lifestyle;
  • Respect confidentiality;
  • Participate in MULAMP activities;
  • Establish a connection with the MU LGBTQ+ Office;
  • Permit the grant writer access to their academic records; and
  • Provide feedback

The goals of the MU LAMP alumni mentors are to:

  • Attend mentor orientation (must live within an hour drive from Marshall University);
  • Commit to MULAMP for one academic year;
  • Establish contact with mentee at least once monthly;
  • Participate in MULAMP activities;
  • Respect mentee;
  • Serve as a resource for your mentee
  • Respect confidentiality;
  • Establish a connection with the MU LGBTQ+ Office, and
  • Provide feedback
