\u00a0New Drinko Fellowship Awarded May 2, 2026<\/h2>\n

\"Dr.<\/p>\n

Anthropology Professor Dr. Robin Conley Riner<\/a> is the 31st\u00a0Distinguished Drinko Fellow<\/strong>. Dr. Riner earned her Ph.D. in anthropology with a focus on linguistic anthropology from the University of California at Los Angeles in 2011 and her B.A. in anthropology and linguistics from New York University in 2002. She teaches anthropology and is a part-time professor of dance at Marshall. She has performed professionally across the country, and her choreography has been showcased at the West Virginia Dance Festival, the Southern Ohio Dance Festival, and the Huntington Music & Arts Festival.<\/p>\n

Dr. Riner\u2019s research explores language use within the context of institutional violence, and she provides linguistics consultation to legal practitioners. Her 2016 Oxford University Press book, Confronting the Death Penalty: How Language Influences Jurors in Capital Cases<\/em>, explores how capital jurors use language to counter moments of empathy they share with defendants to justify their decisions for death. She has also co-authored and edited books on linguistic anthropology, language and law, and social justice, including A New Companion to Linguistic Anthropology<\/em>, Just Words: Law, Language, and Power<\/em>, and Language and Social Justice in Practice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Dr. Riner also works to understand the experiences of military veterans and improve their post-service lives. Her research projects have been funded by the West Virginia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). She received two NEA grants to produce immersive theater performances with local veterans in collaboration with community artists and Marshall University students. Dr. Riner will present the results of her fellowship work, which will bring together her anthropological and dance experience, at the university\u2019s 2028 Drinko Symposium.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Masters at Marshall Distinguished Speaker Series welcomed Jos\u00e9 Andr\u00e9s to campus on October 29th.\u00a0 Andr\u00e9s is a Presidential Medal of Freedom winner, renowned chef, and entrepreneur, who founded World Central Kitchen, which has provided meals to many millions of people facing war, climate, and other humanitarian crises.\u00a0 Ticket sales supported the Marshall University Food Pantry and the Huntington Homeless Services Hub.\u00a0 Andr\u00e9s is pictured here with Marshall Professor of History Emeritus Dr. Dan Holbrook and Drinko Academy Executive Director Dr. Montserrat Miller, who presented Andr\u00e9s with a copy of her award-winning book, Feeding Barcelona, 1714-1975: Public Food Markets, Social Networks, and Consumer Culture<\/i><\/a> (Louisiana State University Press, 2015).<\/p>\n

\u00a0New Drinko Fellowship Awarded May 3, 2025<\/h2>\n

History Professor Dr. Christopher M. White<\/a> is the 30th Distinguished Drinko Fellow<\/strong>. Dr. White teaches Latin American history, U.S. history, world history, food history, conspiracies in U.S. history, and courses on the war on drugs and the global south. He earned his Ph.D. in history in 2005 and his M.A. in Latin American studies in 2002 both from the University of Kansas, and he earned a B.A. in Spanish education from Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., in 2001. He also served in the United States Marine Corps<\/em> from 1994 to 1998.<\/p>\n

Dr. White has received the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism\u2019s Outstanding Community Contributor Award, the Marshall University Distinguished Artists and Scholars Award, and a Marshall International Innovation Grant. He served as director of the Latin American studies minor at Marshall University from 2006 to 2011 and has led the History Department\u2019s “Food Past\/Food Present” series since its inception in 2019.<\/p>\n

Dr. White has authored four books, including Creating a Third World: Mexico, Cuba, and the United States during the Castro Era<\/em>, The History of El Salvador<\/em>, A Global History of the Developing World<\/em>, and The War on Drugs in the Americas<\/em>. He is also co-editor of Appalachian Epidemics: From Smallpox to COVID-19<\/em>.\u00a0He will present the results of his fellowship work at the university\u2019s 2027 Drinko Symposium.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>See the full news release here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
