Level Placement Test
Read Carefully

The test is designed and administered by Duolingo. We accept the scores for level placement; however, we do not partner in test design and administration.

Make sure you understand and follow all rules. This is the only test we accept for the placement. If you are not able to receive certified results, you will be placed into Foundational Level.

Create an Account

  • Go to englishtest.duolingo.com.
  • Enter your email address, your age, and create a password.
  • Click NEXT and select your reason for taking the test.
  • Check your email. You will receive email from Duolingo (Welcome! Confirm your email address) for security measures and verification of address to send results.
  • Select VERIFY MY EMAIL
  • Check your email. You will receive email from Duolingo Thank You message. That means your email address has been verified.
  • Click LOG IN

Practice the Test

  • Complete different types of test tasks that will also be on the official test. You can take the practice test as many times as you want (we don’t see these results).
  • Click PRACTICE TEST.
  • Complete different types of test tasks that will also be on the official test.
  • Take Practice test in a quiet room on a computer (not your smartphone) alone. No one is allowed in the testing room while you are taking the test.
  • Check Your Device to allow Duolingo to use your microphone and camera. The test uses your camera to watch you throughout the test, during the actual test.
  • Begin Practice Test. The practice takes about 10-15 minutes.
  • After completion, an estimated score (between 10 and 160 appears on the screen). Click on Understand Your Score for more information.

Get Ready

  • Read through the Duolingo Test Guide. Here are some highlights:

    • Page 11: Important tips for preparing to take the test, beginning days, even weeks, before you take it. Also, tips for DURING THE TEST and AFTER THE TEST
  • Watch this video to see how to take the test and preview how the tests are presented to the test taker. The same video is available on YouTube here.
  • Log on to englishtest.duolingo.com.
  • Select Purchase the test: BUY NOW. You will be prompted to make $49 testing fee. Follow the instructions to make the payment.
  • Stay in a quiet room and tell everyone you need quiet while you take the test.
  • Check that you have reliable internet connection. A wired connection is best.
  • Check that you have a front-facing camera: the test uses your camera to watch you during the test.
  • Check that you have a microphone.
  • Check that you have speakers. You cannot use headphones or earbuds.
  • Turn your cellphone off and leave it outside the room.

Take the Test

  • Go to englishtest.duolingo.com, and select Take the Test>>DOWNLOAD. Follow the directions to start and take the test.
  • Keep your head facing the computer camera.
  • Do not turn your head.
  • Do not listen to or speak to any person. Only speak and listen to the test.
  • Do not use a cellphone.

Share the Result

  • Log into englishtest.duolingo.com.
  • Find Certified Test Results. Click SEND RESULTS.
  • Select UNIVERSITY.
  • Type Marshall University and select SHARE.
