First-Generation College Celebration<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n \n

Join us Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025<\/strong> on the MSC Plaza from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for our annual First-Gen Celebration followed by First-Gen Coffee Talks in the MSC from 12 – 1 p.m.<\/p>\n

First-Generation College Celebration<\/strong>\u00a0(FGCC) is an annual opportunity to\u00a0raise awareness of the first-generation college student identity by advancing an asset-based, national narrative\u00a0of these students\u2019 experiences and outcomes.<\/p>\n

Since the\u00a0Council for Opportunity in Education\u00a0(COE) and the Center for First-generation Student Success launched the inaugural celebration in 2017, hundreds of higher education institutions, corporations, non-profits, and K-12 schools have joined together in recognizing the achievements of the first-gen community.<\/p>\n

FGCC is celebrated annually on November 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act (\u201cHEA\u201d) of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson.\u00a0This act created federal financial aid programs to fund students\u2019 educations and made key investments in colleges and universities. Many of the HEA\u2019s programs, particularly the\u00a0Federal TRIO programs<\/strong><\/a>, promote postsecondary access, retention, and completion for today\u2019s limited-income, first-generation college students.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

To better serve first-generation students at Marshall, a campus-wide committee was created. The committee works with departments across campus to support first-gen students and to plan the annual first-gen celebration that takes place each November.<\/p>\n
