Closing the Year on a High Note<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are plenty of great news this week as we bring the year to a close:<\/p>\n

1) The department had 8 students graduate this semester, plus another 4 obtained GIS certificates. Congratulations to all in this major achievement!<\/p>\n

2) The department also handed-out The\u00a0Dr. Sam E. Clagg<\/a>\u00a0Scholarship. Every year the Geography faculty selects an outstanding undergraduate geography major, and in some instances, we have the same recipient. The award is based primarily on academic performance but other factors such as participation in the Geography Club or Gamma Theta Upsilon honorary society may also be considered when deemed appropriate by the geography faculty. The scholarship winner receives a tuition waiver, certificate of recognition, recognition during the Honors College Convocation, and\/or a modest cash stipend, when possible. Here are the 2018-2019 recipients:<\/p>\n

3) The provost approved the MA Geography program for online instruction starting in fall 2018. Students admitted into the program will be able to complete the program completely through distance learning. A shout-out to\u00a0Dr. Leonard<\/a>\u00a0for spear-heading this process and to the department faculty for developing courses over the years to reach this milestone.<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0Dr. C\u00f3rdoba<\/a>\u00a0was notified last week by the faculty senate to be one of the recipients for the 2018 summer research awards for his project titled \u201cThe Evolution of Cuba\u2019s air transport network; A graph theoretic approach 1967-2017<\/em>\u201d. The research seeks to evaluate the impact of Cuba\u2019s lack of connectivity with the U.S. air transport network.<\/p>\n

The News Brief will resume in fall 2018, but as always, do not forget to send us updates on your career and personal life- the department always want to hear from current students and alumni.
