Starting the Year with Great News<\/strong><\/p>\n

Welcome back to the new year! Hopefully everyone had a restful winter break. We get started this semester with great news from our students:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 During fall 2018 two students completed their undergraduate degrees:<\/p>\n

Shannon Spencer \u2013 B.S. Geography<\/p>\n

Kya Williams \u2013 B.A. Geography<\/p>\n

Congratulations to both on this significant achievement.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 After multiple applications and interviews across the country (literally), Brian O\u2019Keefe (Geography B.S. 2018) accepted a job offer with the Kanawha County Tax Department as a GIS Technician. Congratulations, Brian and best of luck on the start of your career.<\/p>\n

We also received wonderful news this week on a major milestone achieved by the Geography Department. Based on enrollment statistics for spring 2019, we currently have 57 majors, 41 at the undergraduate level, and 16 graduate students. A lot of this growth has come from the online component of the program, but the department has also had success in recruiting on-campus students. As it has been reported in prior news briefs, Dr. Leonard has created many 2+2 agreements with community colleges across the country, and the development of new online classes and have allowed academic programs to be offered 100% online. Given today\u2019s demand of flexible schedules, accessibility from distant places, and hot market for GIS skills, Marshall Geography is will situated to meet all these needs.<\/p>\n

As we continue to grow in numbers, it is also very important that we also grow as a community. The Geography Club is the perfect venue to create this sense of community where students, alumni, and faculty come together to share their enthusiasm for geography, share resources, develop professional networks, and tackle problems. Please join us for our first Geography Club meeting on Wednesday January 30th\u00a0at 1:30PM in HH 238 \u201cthe overflow lab\u201d. Snacks will be served\u2026for free 😊<\/p>\n
