{"id":942,"date":"2017-10-26T21:53:47","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T02:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/geography\/?p=942"},"modified":"2017-10-26T22:44:15","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T03:44:15","slug":"october-26-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/geography\/2017\/10\/26\/october-26-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"October 26, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We begin this week with another round of great departmental news.\u00a0 On Monday afternoon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/geography\/faculty-staff\/leonard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Leonard<\/a>\u00a0took his drones class to the Tri-State Regional airport to discuss air safety. They were debriefed on airport security by the VP of airport operations and the chief air traffic controller. Among the topics discussed were the regulations for operating unmanned aerial systems near airfields, ceiling limitations, procedure to approve flight plans, dangers of in-flight encounters, and the future of drone operations and regulations. Students got a \u201cbehind the scenes\u201d tour of the radar room where they got to learn about flight operations below 10,000 ft. They were also taken to the air traffic control tower and got to see runway operations and departure procedures for an Airbus 320 that blasted off right in-front of the class! If this doesn\u2019t make you want to sign-up for this class, I do not know what will! Dr. Leonard is offering this class again this coming semester (spring 2018) on Mondays from 4PM to 6:20PM.<\/p>\n<p>Sticking with drones and GIS, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/geography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geography Department<\/a>\u00a0will be hosting once again GIS Day on November 15, 2017.\u00a0 The keynote speaker will be Mack McCarty from the US Army Corps of Engineers \u2013 Huntington.\u00a0 He will discuss their use of drones for GIS and remote sensing. GIS Day is part of the nationwide activities that occur during geography awareness week (November 13-17).<\/p>\n<p>The department also received news that GEO 422 (Environmental Geography) has been approved for online instruction. The class was developed and taken through the certification process by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/geography\/faculty-staff\/walz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Walz<\/a>. She will be teaching this class this coming semester (spring 2018) on Wednesdays from 4PM to 6:20PM. Ginny Adams, Reid Adams, and Matthew Connolly at the Departments of Biology and Geography, University of Central Arkansas, are seeking interested and qualified applicants for graduate assistantships to study the long-term stability and persistence of fish assemblages in\u00a0Ozark streams of Arkansas in relation to land use and stream geomorphology.<\/p>\n<p>Students will have funding from both teaching (fall and spring terms) and research assistantships (summer) throughout their thesis. Students are expected to conduct their thesis research project and complete required course work. Students will receive a stipend (~ $12,000\/year), in-state and out-of-state tuition waivers, as well as funding for travel to conferences and field expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications: B.S. in Biology, Fisheries Science, Environmental Science, or related fields. Minimum GPA of 3.0 and a combined quantitative\/verbal GRE score of 300. The applicant must have the ability to work independently, enjoy long hours in beautiful Ozark streams, and work with a team. Strongest applicants will have prior research experience, fish identification skills, and experience with GIS analysis.
