The policy update will results in meaningful changes for Graduate Faculty and College Administrators. Implementation of the changes will occur over the Summer 2023 semester. The changes will occur as faculty apply or renew their graduate faculty status.\u00a0 New application forms have been developed to facilitate a smooth transition.<\/p>\n<h4>Summary of Major Revisions to UPAA-13<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Added information related to\u00a0<strong>\u201cethical research practices\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in 2.1.2.\n<ul>\n<li>Added conditions for removal or change for\u00a0<strong>breach of ethical practices<\/strong>\u00a0in 2.9.<\/li>\n<li>Added\u00a0<strong>IRB completion<\/strong>\u00a0as a requirement for Graduate Chair Faculty in 5.1.2.8.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Changed the\u00a0<strong>number of levels<\/strong>\u00a0of graduate faculty status from four to three.\n<ul>\n<li>5.1 Graduate Chair Faculty (for thesis and dissertation chairs)<\/li>\n<li>5.2 Graduate Faculty<\/li>\n<li>5.3 Associate Graduate Faculty (combined elements from Associate and Instructor)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Added\u00a0<strong>\u201cdegree applicable\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in 2.6.<\/li>\n<li>Added a consistent\u00a0<strong>timeline for terms<\/strong>\u00a0to end each semester in 2.10.<\/li>\n<li>Added a provision for\u00a0<strong>Emeritus<\/strong>\u00a0faculty in 6.2.<\/li>\n<li>Related to the lowest level of status\n<ul>\n<li>Removed stipulation that only the dean and not GC approves this level of status<\/li>\n<li>Removed indication that this level does not appear in the database<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Updated the\u00a0<strong>conditions for appeal\u00a0<\/strong>under 7.2\n<ul>\n<li>Added a timeframe to appeal a GC decision in 7.3.2.1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>GRADUATE EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY<\/h3>\n<p>Participating in graduate education requires faculty whose education, professional experience, scholarly research and creative work, and commitment to the discipline is of the highest caliber.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate faculty are required to adhere to the ethical research practices of their field when conducting research and when guiding the research of graduate students. All research should be in compliance with applicable law and the policies and procedures of Marshall University, the Marshall University Research Corporation, Marshall Health, Marshall University\u2019s Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), as applicable.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/mubert.marshall.edu\/redbook\/redbooklisting.php\">Redbook<\/a>: The Redbook contains a listing of faculty members who have been approved for various classifications of Graduate Faculty status.<\/h4>\n<h3>Application Process<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Read the MU Board of Governors UPAA-13 Policy on Graduate Faculty Membership.<br \/>\nThis policy provides complete details on membership criteria, application process, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/graduate-council\/files\/Procedures-for-Applying-for-or-Renewing-Graduate-Faculty-Status-1.pdf\">Procedures For Applying For Or Renewing Graduate Faculty Status<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Fill in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/graduate-council\/files\/GraduateFacultyApplicationCoversheet-2.pdf\">Coversheet<\/a> (required of all applicants).<\/li>\n<li>Fill in the appropriate Checklist form:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/graduate-council\/files\/GraduateChairFacultyApplicationChecklist-1.pdf\">Graduate Chair Faculty<\/a> (Chair)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/graduate-council\/files\/GraduateFacultyApplicationChecklist-1.pdf\">Graduate Faculty<\/a> (Graduate)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/graduate-council\/files\/AssociateGraduateFacultyApplicationChecklist-1.pdf\">Associate Graduate Faculty<\/a> (Associate)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Review additional criteria your college may require for Graduate Faculty status:\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/graduate-council\/files\/COLA-Criteria-for-Grad-Profs.docx\">College of Liberal Arts<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Obtain signatures on the Coversheet and Checklist and submit to your Dean.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>With the approval of your Dean, your approved status and term will be entered into a temporary section of the <em>Redbook<\/em> directory of graduate faculty which is not visible. Graduate Faculty Membership is required to teach Biomedical Research (BMR) courses and to lead and serve on graduate student committees, per Graduate College policy. There are four levels of membership: Doctoral, Graduate, Associate, and Instructor.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The instructor level is for faculty who teach graduate courses.<\/li>\n<li>The Associate level is for non-tenure track faculty to serve on BMR master\u2019s and doctoral (Ph.D.) student committees.<\/li>\n<li>The Graduate level is for tenure-track faculty to serve on BMR master\u2019s and doctoral (Ph.D.) student committees.<\/li>\n<li>The Doctoral level is for tenure-track faculty to chair BMR master\u2019s and doctoral (Ph.D.) student committees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The term of appointment for the <strong>SOM Doctoral level is three years<\/strong>; the terms for the other levels are two years. Membership requires evidence of scholarly activity as determined by peer-reviewed publications, extramural grants submitted and\/or funded, and presentations at scientific meetings. Applications may be downloaded from the Marshall University Graduate College website.
