{"id":2999,"date":"2018-07-06T11:05:28","date_gmt":"2018-07-06T15:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/?page_id=2999"},"modified":"2025-12-02T12:41:30","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T17:41:30","slug":"checklist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/incoming-students\/checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Before Student Orientation<\/h2>\n<div class=\"flex py-3 \"><div class=\"mt-1\"><span class=\"inline bg-red-700 text-white px-2 py-1 font-semibold rounded-sm uppercase text-sm mr-2 my-1\">Note<\/span><\/div><div class=\"ml-3\">You&#8217;ll want to have a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/admissions\/undergraduate\/admitted-freshman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Admitted Freshman Steps<\/a> for instructions from the Office of Admissions<\/div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>For students receiving admission to the college through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/prospective-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Admission by Invitation<\/a> pathway, be sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/2021\/10\/01\/invitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accept your invitation<\/a> to join the Honors College before the stated deadline (find this on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/prospective-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Admission<\/a> page)<\/li>\n<li>For students who have requesting review through our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/prospective-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Admission by Holistic Review<\/a> pathway for possible admission, make sure that you submit your application before the stated deadline.<\/li>\n<li>For ALL admitted students (by either pathway), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/2021\/10\/01\/invitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accept the admitted student Honors College Scholarship award<\/a> in your myMU before the stated deadline.\n<ul>\n<li>For a helpful checklist for students intending to become #oneoftheherd, checkout the university&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/newstudentchecklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enrollment Checklist<\/a>.<strong> Students will need to have activated their student account (as seen in the Enrollment Checklist list under \u201cID and Computing Account\u201d in order to obtain their login credentials for accessing myMU and accepting the Honors College invitation. IF you have issues after setting up your account, try the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/selfservice\/loginselfservices\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Login Self Service<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scholarships<\/a> available to incoming, first-year students in the Honors college. Eligibility is based on criteria laid out in the original donor agreements for the funds that support these scholarships and may have standardized test score requirements at least as high as those for or Admission by Invitation pathway. These are due through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/topscholar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Top Scholars<\/a> on <strong>15 December<\/strong> annually.<\/li>\n<li>Interested in <strong data-start=\"458\" data-end=\"491\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/honors-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honors Housing<\/a>?<\/strong> Students admitted to the Honors College can request placement in the Honors Community in First-Year South. To be eligible, you must join the Honors College before completing your Housing Agreement. Already submitted it? No problem, just email <a class=\"decorated-link cursor-pointer\" href=\"mailto:housing@marshall.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"734\" data-end=\"785\">housing@marshall.edu<\/a> to request an update.<\/li>\n<li>Go ahead and use <strong>#HerdHonors<\/strong> on social media to let everyone know you&#8217;re a proud member of the Honors College at Marshall University!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Student Orientation<\/h2>\n<p>There is not a separate Honors College session at Orientation&#8211;though you are welcome to come visit us in Old Main 230&#8211;so please review this checklist carefully. During Summer Orientation, you will meet with an academic advisor. You will receive your schedule for fall classes at that time. As an Honors College student, there are several things you should pay close attention to at Orientation and in the fall semester.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As you prepare to join us, you should already have a date set for your <strong>New Student Orientation<\/strong>. If not, you can select one through the <a href=\"https:\/\/orientation.marshall.edu\/\">Orientation Portal<\/a> or by emailing <a href=\"mailto:orientation@marshall.edu\">orientation@marshall.edu<\/a> for assistance. At orientation, you\u2019ll meet with an academic advisor to choose honors-designated General Education courses that align with your major and university requirements. Be sure to <strong>look for Heather Brooks<\/strong>, our Honors Academic Advisor, during the event as she&#8217;ll be there to answer questions and make sure you&#8217;re in the best shape possible for the fall semester.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make sure your academic advisor is aware you are in the Honors College when you meet at Orientation.<\/strong> This will help insure you are getting the sections you need to meet honors requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Please review the list of general education classes offering an Honors section. You can find it here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/courses\">https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/courses<\/a>. Scroll down to <em>&#8220;Honors Designated<\/em> Courses.&#8221; If you are registered for a non-honors section of any of the courses you see there (e.g. PSY201 rather than PSY201<strong>H<\/strong>), please talk to your advisor about switching sections or waiting until a future semester to take that course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>In Your First Fall Semester<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>All Honors College students are <strong>required to attend a mandatory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/current-students\/firstyear_check-in\/\">First Year Check-In<\/a> during their first semester<\/strong> at Marshall. These are one-on-one sessions with an advisor in the college that you will be expected to schedule. Watch your Marshall email account early in the fall semester for more details about scheduling and for how the session will be conducted.<\/li>\n<li>Take some time to <strong>look through the Honors College website<\/strong> in full.\n<ul>\n<li>And for sure look over the <a href=\"https:\/\/mds.marshall.edu\/honorspublications\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honors College Policy Handbook<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Pay special attention to the section on the page found at &#8220;Current Students&#8221; &gt; &#8220;Advising &#8230;&#8221; &gt; titled &#8220;<strong>Good Standing<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0as it outlines the requirements for staying in good standing and on track with the Honors College curriculum.<\/li>\n<li>This website is updated regularly with current notices for events and expectations.
