With opportunities for integrative learning, hands-on experiences, and cultural exchanges, this program promises to be a transformative experience that enhances your global perspective and academic journey. From the Scots-Irish settlers who helped shape both the culture and economy of Appalachia to the shared traditions of music, storytelling, and labor movements, you\u2019ll discover how these regions have influenced each other in profound ways. Today, Ireland\u2019s status as a global hub for technology and innovation offers exciting opportunities for students to engage with cutting-edge industries while reflecting on the shared cultural heritage between these two places. This program will allow you to see not just the historical roots but also the contemporary relevance of these connections, providing a transformative learning experience.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ml-3\">What do I need to know?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"flex py-3 \"><div class=\"mt-1\"><span class=\"inline bg-red-700 text-white px-2 py-1 font-semibold rounded-sm uppercase text-sm mr-2 my-1\">Note<\/span><\/div><div class=\"ml-3\"><strong>15 European Union credits will be transferred as 7.5 US credits at Marshall<\/strong>. These credits will likely be \u201cunclassified\u201d when accepted at Marshall. It will be up to a student&#8217;s major program or college to classify them as they see fit. These can be used to fulfill university, college, or major program requirements. This is the most flexible arrangement. It will be possible to provide curricular materials for advisors and faculty to review and decide.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex py-3 \">\n<ul>\n<li>Dates <strong>16-31 May 2026<\/strong>. Departure from United States on 16 May, program begins 18 May. Program ends 30 May and return to United States on 31 May 2026.<\/li>\n<li>Total tuition and fees (including housing, local transportation, and two meals\/day) are <strong>$4500<\/strong> for 2026 and may be included in your total Cost of Attendance for MU.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ALL students who are eligible for study abroad<\/strong>, whether or not they are in the Honors College, may apply to attend the program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ALL students successfully completing the progra<\/strong>m will earn a complete\u00a0<strong>Certificate in Cultural Landscapes<\/strong> from DkIT as well as\u00a0<strong>7.5 hours of transfer credit<\/strong>\u00a0to Marshall University.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ALL students should talk to<\/strong> the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/nationalscholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of National Scholarships<\/a>\u00a0manager, Heather Smith, for possible funds to assist their attendance of the program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>HONORS<\/strong>\u00a0students in good standing, in addition to talking to Heather Smith, can apply for funds through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honors Council Grant\u00a0<\/a>to assist their attendance of the program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>HONORS<\/strong>\u00a0students may apply\u00a0<strong>3<\/strong>\u00a0hours to\u00a0<strong>General Honors<\/strong>\u00a0and another\u00a0<strong>3<\/strong>\u00a0hours to the upper-division\u00a0<strong>Core Honors<\/strong>\u00a0requirements!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/honors\/files\/Ireland-Study-Abroad-FAQ_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAQ<\/a> sheet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What do students who went say?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Elijah<\/strong>: <em>The trip was 100% a life changing experience! I think it&#8217;s one if those things that even in 40 years we won&#8217;t forget the magic of it all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Zachary<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Some of the greatest people I have met went there. You end up making great friends!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeorja<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>I had the privilege of visiting so many historical sites and meeting so many unique people. My experience could only be described as magical!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kayleigh:<\/strong> <em>I arrived in Ireland with the analytical mindset of a STEM student, appreciating all things science and understanding the world through a calculating eye. It&#8217;s one thing to read piles of literature on Celtic mythology, researching the various stories and trying to understand the root of it all, but it&#8217;s an entirely different thing to be fully immersed in the land it was created and surrounded by the people who are descended from those who carried these stories orally for centuries, and I&#8217;m eternally grateful to now have that experience which considerably deepened my understanding of the layers of culture buried within that literature.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How do I apply to go?<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll apply through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/study-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of Study Abroad.<\/a> Submit your application before<strong> 01 March 2026<\/strong>. With the hope that other organizations will similarly build connections and community through sharing spaces, she describes the challenges and amazing successes she witnessed as tourists and locals gathered together through their shared connection to local archeological monuments like Newgrange.<\/p>\n<p>Tuffy worked for the Office of Public Works (OPW) for over 40 years managing visitor services at National Monuments sites in the Boyne Valley in Ireland. Her work for the OPW included managing Br\u00fa na B\u00f3inne Visitor Centre, which is the starting point for all visits to the World Heritage Properties of Newgrange and Knowth. She also managed visitor services at the Hill of Tara, Old Mellifont Abbey, Trim Castle and Loughcrew. Altogether, these sites receive approximately 500,000 visitors annually. She retired in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Tuffy has extensive experience in lecturing, teaching, and broadcasting and has written visitor guides to archaeological sites.
