{"id":10676,"date":"2019-05-01T15:08:50","date_gmt":"2019-05-01T20:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/it\/?p=10676"},"modified":"2019-05-16T12:23:55","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T17:23:55","slug":"action-required-multi-factor-authentication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/it\/2019\/05\/01\/action-required-multi-factor-authentication\/","title":{"rendered":"[Action Required]:  Multi-Factor Authentication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday, May 16th, 2019:\u00a0\u00a0Update for Banner Users &#8211; [Action Required]\n<p>This coming Sunday morning, May 19th, 2019,\u00a0 during the scheduled maintenance window, Enterprise Applications will be enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on Banner 9.<\/p>\n<p>If you have already enrolled in MFA, you will be prompted to enter your full Marshall University email address to begin the MFA authorization process.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Wednesday, May 1st, 2019:\u00a0 [Action Required] &#8211; Multi-Factor Authentication<\/p>\n<p>As we announced on January 25th, Marshall University Information Technology will be enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).\u00a0 All Marshall employees will be <strong>REQUIRED<\/strong> to enroll for MFA by May 14th, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Officially starting today <strong>Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 <\/strong>ALL MU employees will be <strong>REQUIRED<\/strong> to enroll for MFA.\u00a0 When you log in to any service requiring MFA beginning today, you will get a message similar to this:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Your organization requires more information&#8230;&#8217; screen during your next logon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/it\/files\/Marco1837-More-Info-Required.jpg\" width=\"359\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who does this affect?<\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em>All Marshall University students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it affect?<\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Faculty and Staff will currently be able to use enhanced protection with their Banner access, VPN, and Office 365 services like OneDrive.\u00a0 Their access to Exchange e-mail and remote access logons will be enabled in the near future.\u00a0 <em>A list of services and expected implementation dates are available on our website<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/mfa\">www.marshall.edu\/mfa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why should I use multi-factor authentication?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the right thing to do to protect institutional data, protecting personal information, student data, employee data, and financial data from being compromised as well as minimize disruption and abuse of campus technology resources.\u00a0 Increasingly in the past year, cyber-criminals have targeted higher education institutions by using stolen credentials to file fraudulent tax returns, hijack employee direct-deposit transactions, and use institutional e-mail accounts to send an ever-changing stream of phishing scams.\u00a0 Two-factor authentication minimizes this type of fraud as you are notified and required to verify logins to your account.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall University also contracts with auditing firms like Clifton Larson Allen (CLA) and Ernst and Young (EY) to conduct our annual Financial\/Financial Aid compliance audits.\u00a0 Review of IT processes and procedures is a component of these audits in which password security and proper access to sensitive information is scrutinized and assessed for following IT best practices.\u00a0 The Banner Oversight Committee has reviewed and approved this plan to keep Marshall University in compliance with said audits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I do it? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most convenient and recommended method is to download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smart phone.<\/p>\n<p>You can visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/mfa\">www.marshall.edu\/mfa<\/a> for step-by-step instructions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I approve a sign-in request for 30 Days?<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen you connect from off-campus, your device or application will still generate a MFA verification prompt, but you should be provided a check-box option to \u2018<em>[ ] Don\u2019t ask again for 30 days<\/em>\u2019.\u00a0 We recommend selecting this option only when using a trusted device; you should not select this when using a shared public computer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if I can\u2019t do MFA?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have a smart phone there are alternatives to authenticate using MFA.\u00a0 Please check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/it\/mfa\">www.marshall.edu\/it\/mfa<\/a> for those options.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When do I need to complete this by?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TODAY!<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s simple and easy and the sooner the better.\u00a0 You\u2019ll have a 14 day opt-in window. Contact our <strong>IT Service Desk<\/strong> (info below) if you need assistance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where can I find additional information and access training?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Additional information can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/it\/mfa\">www.marshall.edu\/it\/mfa<\/a> and training sessions for groups can be scheduled by emailing <a href=\"mailto:it_training@marshall.edu\">it_training@marshall.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional info:<\/strong>\u00a0 A recent change to the Marshall Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) system currently suppresses verification requests when you are connected via the campus network.\u00a0 This change bypasses the need to verify your on-campus logons to MFA enabled services for the time being.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Engage with IT for additional updates<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Marshall IT team is continuing to prepare other campus services to use MFA to protect both University and personal data by securing logons with your MUNet account credentials.
