Our Japanese language faculty at Marshall University is award-winning. Both Drs. Anderson and Rivas have been awarded teaching awards from Marshall’s Center for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Rivas is currently the 2022-2023 Hedrick Faculty Teaching Fellow and has been awarded the 2015-2016 Distinguished Artists and Scholars Award from Marshall’s Center for Teaching and Learning, 2015 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend, and the 2018-2019 West Virginia Humanities Council Fellow.

Both faculty do numerous outreach events, including the Japanese Immersion Camp for elementary school students of Cabell and Putnam counties (contact Dr. Anderson) and National Youth Science Foundation Academies for middle school youth in Cabell, Kanawha, and Tucker counties (contact Dr. Rivas).
