He was the editor of the\u00a0<em>Charleston Daily Mail<\/em>\u00a0from 1950 to 1978 and continued as a contributing editor from 1978 to 1984. He won the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi national award for distinguished service in journalism in 1958.
