One of her reporters was the late Soupy Sales. She was a former editor at <em>The Herald-Dispatch<\/em>. Nichols began her teaching career at Vinson High School in 1950. She joined the faculty of Huntington High School in 1957, and there taught English and journalism, along with advising the student newspaper\u2014<em>The Tatler<\/em>\u2014and yearbook, for nearly 30 years. She was the 1984 Cabell County Teacher of the Year and she retired in 1986. Nichols had many students who went on to successful local and national journalism careers.<\/p>\n<p>Following her retirement from public education, Nichols served as supervisor of language arts for Cabell County Schools. In her \u201cspare time,\u201d she edited numerous books for professional writers and wrote sections for national standardized tests such as the SAT.<\/p>\n<p>Nichols assumed positions of leadership in community and professional organizations and served as president of many including Cabell County Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW, the Huntington Woman&#8217;s Club and Panhellenic.
