He worked in various editing positions at <em>The Miami Herald, The Washington Times, <\/em>and <em>The Rockford Register Star, <\/em>in Illinois. He was assistant city editor of <em>The Detroit News <\/em>before moving to his dream job at <em>The New York Times. <\/em>He was the assistant science editor of <em>The Times<\/em> for nearly ten years. He was a founding member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association where he received membership card number 4.
