Once the location of the historic Anderson-Newcomb Co., this building was built in 1902, the same year Marshall began its visual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arts program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Th<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-316 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/leedgreen\/files\/IMG_7738-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7738\" width=\"195\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/leedgreen\/files\/IMG_7738-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/leedgreen\/files\/IMG_7738-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/>e $13 million transformation\u00a0to remarkable, world-class visual arts facility incorporates of the building\u2019s original hardwood floors with\u00a065,000 pounds of new steel, smart lighting, highly-efficient heating and cooling and Wi-Fi throughout.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/greentrail\/\"><span style=\"background-color: #009900; color: #ffffff;\">RETURN TO <strong>GREEN TRAIL<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Visual Arts Center is intrinsically sustainable due to the fact that it is an adaptive reuse of a historic, vacant structure.\u00a0 This means that the majority of the existing materials and utility infrastructure were maintained and reused in the new life of the building, thus reducing demand for production of new materials.\u00a0 The downtown location of the VAC also allows occupants to walk or bike from campus and to nearby restaurants and other services, which reduces the need for automobile transportation and lowers pollution.\u00a0 No new parking needed to be constructed for the project, as there are three large parking garages in very close proximity.<\/p>\n<p>Existing wood and terrazz<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/leedgreen\/files\/IMG_7991.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-317 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/leedgreen\/files\/IMG_7991-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7991\" width=\"175\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/leedgreen\/files\/IMG_7991-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/leedgreen\/files\/IMG_7991-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>o floors were refinished throughout the building.\u00a0 Sealants and coatings were required to meet strict requirements for volatile organic compound content, thus improving indoor air quality.<\/p>\n<p>The energy efficiency of the building envelope was significantly improved with new continuous insulation on the interior and the existing windows were replaced with thermally-broken units with Low-E coated, insulated glazing.\u00a0 The building utilizes a variable refrigerant flow HVAC system, which is more efficient than standard heating and cooling systems and allows for independent control to increase occupant comfort.\u00a0 High efficiency lighting was utilized with occupancy sensor controls.\u00a0 Water conserving plumbing fixtures were also installed.\u00a0 Based on energy cost analysis, the building is 30% more efficient than a standard project of comparable size.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Marshall University&#8217;s Visual Arts Center (VAC) is located in downtown Huntington across from Pullman Square along 3rd Avenue.
