The information is provided to let people know what has been banned\/challenged elsewhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>2018<\/h2>\n<p>Two books by Jeanette Winter were challenged as part of the 3rd-grade curriculum at Colter (WY) Elementary School a Parent wrote to the school board and complained that the books were un-American and upsetting for their family. The issue is unresolved.<\/p>\n<h2>2016<\/h2>\n<p>Challenged in the Duval County (FL) public schools because a coalition of parents believes the book is inappropriate for promoting another religion that is not Christianity and is too violent for young children. Critics claim the book promotes &#8220;the Koran and praying to Muhammad.&#8221; Challenged at the Eau Claire (WI) schools because the book contains an Islamic prayer. The book is about the Taliban taking control of an Afghan village and preventing girls from going to school. After Nasreen&#8217;s father is kidnapped and presumed killed, her grandmother smuggles her each day to an underground school where she can learn to read and write.<\/p>\n<h2>2014<\/h2>\n<p>Challenged in Johnson City (NY) schools as suggested reading because of violent illustrations and storyline. The book is about the Taliban taking control of an Afghan village and preventing girls from going to school.
