The undergraduate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/math\/research\/seminar\/\">Senior Seminar (MTH 491)<\/a> course provides all mathematics majors with the opportunity to work on an individual research project.<\/p>\n<h2>Undergraduate Research Opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Research programs for undergraduate mathematics majors include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/math\/research\/differential-analyzer\/\">Differential Analyzer Laboratory<\/a>, supervised by Dr. Bonita Lawrence, has several ongoing student research projects.<\/li>\n<li>The Mathematical Biology research group, mentored by Dr. Anna Mummert, is actively studying the spread and control of influenza using discrete mathematical modeling. This research was funded by an <abbr title=\"National Science Foundation\">NSF<\/abbr> mathematical biology research grant.<\/li>\n<li>Individual student projects can be funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sure\/\">Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)<\/a> grant program.<\/li>\n<li>Individual student projects can also be funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvspacegrant.org\/programs\/college-students\/undergraduate-research-fellows\/\">NASA West Virginia Space Grant Undergraduate Fellowship Program<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In 2016, the Mathematics department received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maa.org\/pic-math\">PIC Math grant<\/a> to facilitate applied student research projects. The department continues to offer courses in the same style in which teams of students serve a mathematical consultants for local governments and organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"columns w-full lg:w-5\/12  lg:px-6    mt-6\">\n<div class=\"\">\n\n<div>\n<h2>Modeling police patrol routes<\/h2>\n<p>In 2016, a team of undergraduates analyzed the police patrol zones for the City of Huntington, using a mathematical model which they developed.
