{"id":1212,"date":"2025-07-24T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/?p=1212"},"modified":"2025-07-23T20:59:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T20:59:08","slug":"bloomberg-photo-editor-reflects-on-marshall-roots-and-global-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/2025\/07\/24\/bloomberg-photo-editor-reflects-on-marshall-roots-and-global-career\/","title":{"rendered":"Bloomberg Photo Editor reflects on Marshall roots and global career"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>When Takaaki Iwabu first arrived on Marshall University\u2019s campus, he was attracted not only by practical reasons but also by the promise of a lively journalism community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I was preparing for my study abroad in Japan, I found a book titled \u2018Journalism Ivies,\u2019 which listed all the accredited journalism programs in the U.S. Marshall stood out with a good reputation in the campus newspaper, and the lowest tuition,\u201d Iwabu explained.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu_bloomberg-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu_bloomberg-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu_bloomberg.jpg 467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/>A graduate from Nihon University with a B.A. in International Relations, Iwabu spent most of his time in graduate school on the Marshall campus working for the Parthenon, the school newspaper, as a staff photographer. He recalls the size of the campus as ideally suited to his dual pursuits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe campus size was perfect for me to do both studying and socializing,\u201d Iwabu said.<\/p>\n<p>That balance, he says, encouraged both academic growth and lifelong friendships. Inside the School of Journalism, Iwabu found an environment full of positivity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1215 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu.poyiasia.02-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu.poyiasia.02-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu.poyiasia.02-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu.poyiasia.02-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/Iwabu.poyiasia.02.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone was proud of the program so the atmosphere was tremendously positive,\u201d Iwabu noted.<\/p>\n<p>Under Dean Dr. Harold Shaver\u2019s inclusive leadership, \u201che had such an open view to the diversity and that was an immense hel,\u201d and guided by Professor Rebecca Johnson\u2019s memorable counsel, \u201cyou take photos with your heart, not your camera,\u201d Iwabu deepened his commitment to photojournalism. He also credits Jane Knight, the school\u2019s secretary, who \u201cwas a source of encouragement and she actually helped me to land my first job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After graduating in 1994 with an M.A. in Journalism, Iwabu began a series of newsroom internships and staff positions that took him from West Virginia to Utah, New York, South Carolina and North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worked for The Herald-Dispatch as an intern for several months,\u201d Iwabu said. \u201cAfter another internship in Utah, I landed on a staff photographer position in Niagara Falls, New York. I continued my newspaper photographer career in Columbia, South Carolina, and finally in Raleigh, North Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1214 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/folioadded001-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/folioadded001-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/folioadded001-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/folioadded001-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/folioadded001-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2025\/07\/folioadded001.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Iwabu was twice named South Carolina Newspaper Photographer of the Year.\u00a0 He\u2019s a winner of more than 50 photography awards, including the Society of Newspaper Design\u2019s Silver Award and the Asian American Journalists Association\u2019s National Award in Photography. In 2013, after 22 years in the United States, he returned to Japan and joined NHK before taking on his current role as a photo editor at Bloomberg, a position he has held for the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Though his career spans continents and major media outlets, Iwabu\u2019s memories of Marshall remain vivid. He still upholds the same standards he first practiced in Huntington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDedication to the craft, and for me, it is photojournalism,\u201d Iwabu said. \u201cI found it when I was studying at Marshall. I remember driving up to a print shop, miles away from campus, in the wee hours to check the quality of photos on the Parthenon. I would like to think that I still have that attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his time in Huntington, Iwabu highlights the bonds formed among international students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational students had a close-knit community,\u201d Iwabu said. \u201cThe comradery I experienced was priceless.
