Edwards School of Medicine<\/a> (JCESOM) <a href=\"https:\/\/jcesom.marshall.edu\/health-sciences-graduate-programs\/doctor-of-philosophy-in-biomedical-research-phd\/\">biomedical research program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-right lg:pl-8 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-mr-24 xl:-mr-32 lg:mt-4 lg:ml-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-l-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\">&#8220;I realized that research offered a vehicle to ask deeper questions.&#8221;<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">- Sidney Strause<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cI realized that research offered a vehicle to ask deeper questions\u2014not only how diseases present clinically, but why they occur at the cellular level and how we might intervene more precisely,\u201d Sidney said.<\/p>\n<p>That realization led her into biomedical research and into a close mentorship with faculty who continue to shape her academic and professional journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMentoring graduate students such as Sidney is about turning their initial scientific curiosity into research capability,\u201d said Sandrine Pierre, PhD, professor of biomedical sciences at JCESOM. \u201cAs they advance into the program, they gradually cease to be trainees\u2014they become emerging colleagues who will shape the future of biomedical research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During her undergraduate studies, Sidney sought out hands-on research opportunities and connected with Dr. Pierre to explore cardiovascular physiology. What began as an introduction to laboratory work quickly evolved into a sustained research mentorship.<\/p>\n<p>As her experience grew, so did her independence in the lab. Early on, Sidney focused on learning laboratory techniques and understanding experimental systems. Now, she is developing her own scientific questions and designing experiments to answer them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-right lg:pl-8 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-mr-24 xl:-mr-32 lg:mt-4 lg:ml-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-l-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\">&#8220;Mentoring graduate students such as Sidney is about turning their initial scientific curiosity into research capability.&#8221;<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">- Dr. Pierre<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cAt this stage, I\u2019m beginning to articulate my own hypotheses and think through how the tools and methods I\u2019m learning can be applied to test them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sidney\u2019s work focuses on the molecular signaling pathways that allow heart cells to produce energy efficiently and adapt to stress. In conditions like heart failure, these systems can become disrupted, leading to structural and functional changes in the heart over time. Her research examines how specific ion transport proteins and cellular signaling networks influence this remodeling process, with the goal of identifying mechanisms that could inform more targeted therapies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, Sidney\u2019s work earned <a href=\"https:\/\/jcesom.marshall.edu\/news\/musom-news\/biomedical-research-doctoral-student-receives-international-award\/\">international recognition<\/a> when she received the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics Poster Prize at the 17th International Meeting on P-Type ATPases in Health &amp; Disease in Cairns, Australia\u2014placing her research among leading scientists in the field.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1669 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2026\/03\/Strause_Sidney_09-copy-295x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sidney Strause stands in a lab smiling while wearing her white coat\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2026\/03\/Strause_Sidney_09-copy-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2026\/03\/Strause_Sidney_09-copy-1006x1024.jpg 1006w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2026\/03\/Strause_Sidney_09-copy-768x782.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2026\/03\/Strause_Sidney_09-copy.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sidney was also selected for the highly competitive <a href=\"https:\/\/jcesom.marshall.edu\/news\/musom-news\/marshall-university-phd-student-awarded-prestigious-american-physiological-society-fellowship\/\">Porter Physiology Development Fellowship<\/a> from the American Physiological Society (APS), one of the nation\u2019s most prestigious trainee awards for graduate students in physiology. The fellowship has provided research support, structured professional development, and access to a national mentorship network, strengthening her scientific training and expanding her engagement within the physiology community.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Sidney was awarded a prestigious American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship, which supports her research on cardioprotection during adverse remodeling in heart failure progression. The fellowship underscores the national significance of her work and its potential to improve understanding and treatment of heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Through these opportunities, Sidney has developed technical skills, analytical confidence, and a deeper understanding of hypothesis-driven science.
